Alltel mobile internet

I know i have yet to do more of my own research on this topic but:

I plan to go see my girl in Indiana this summer. I was hoping to empower my laptop with the interwebz. I have Alltel for my cell phone, and was wondering about using them for data access. I think i can get a discount because i have a cell plan. I don't want a contract because I'll only need it 2/3 months tops. If not Alltel, can someone recommend another? I need very little power really, a few MB's to be generated from getting gmail, another 20 or so MB a month to access my Zimbra account, maby 400MB a month for suring the webs while we ride in my truck. Mainly weather and maps access while on the road, cause after i leave Indiana, i'm going to Wisconsin to see my bro's gf while he's up there and many other friends i've known for several years. So really, those familiar with norther cell topography are best to answer that question, cause that's where's it's really needed. I'll be stopping in Alabama on my way back to Georgia..so a little southern area working would be nice too, but not near as necessary as when i'm up north. I am an UTTER NEWB at this cell phone data access stuff, so crash courser please 😛. Oh and i can use a USB or ExpressCard 😛.

Also...just incase there L&R lurkers..

Alltel & Sprint have evdo data roaming agreements so Sprint will give you the same coverage. Sprint has an evdo reseller called www.millenicom.com Click on the mobile broadband internet link and go from there. Millenicom charges a flat $59.99 per month with no contracts (there is a setup charge though). All other providers are generally $59.99/month + taxes + 2 year contract (alltel will be no exception). Unless you're in the absolute sticks, it should give you pretty good coverage. I use millenicom myself and it's a great outfit and a great price (I hate contracts). On a side note, there data card is a very small usb modem (about the size of a USB Flash drive)

If you have an EV-DO phone you can pay $25 a month through alltel and have unlimited data minutes that way. No hardware and half the price of the standalone modem. There is also no contract as far as I'm aware (maybe 3 months but I don't think it's even that). I've used it in the past and it's a great service especially for the price. We now have the modem and it gets a slightly better connection than my RAZR, but its also a $99 piece of equipment.

I have a Kyocera Strobe, it's internet EVDO capable, and i have used EVDO for one month in my main city and dam is it good. But question is, how do I get my laptop to use my phone as an internet connection. I know that i can easily add full data unlimited for 19.99 (All Axcess Pass) extra a month, which would be a steal. If you could kind of allude to how it works with my laptop, this certainly sounds like the best plan.

Hmm 39.99 for the equipment and getting to turn the plan on and off at desire...I like. I'll look into getting this.

On a side note, anyone know Alltel's performance in the North? In Wiconsin, my brother could make good calls, but text messaging was a lil troublesome, and i know that means internet might be troublesome. But it's Indiana I really need it, so that's all that really matters to me.

There's a difference between the cell phone data and the tethering plan. For $20 you get to use the internal browser, and for $25 you can use it as a usb modem, but you don't get the internal browser (this option isn't advertised much at all). My RAZR used a standard mini usb cable so I just downloaded the usb driver and set up the connection using Windows Dialup Connections. Now I'm not sure what your situation is with your phone, but the data kit isn't necessarily mandatory.

I believe the name of the service is "Axcess Data Connection"

I can use my phone as a bluetooth modem with my computer. So currently I can get dialup on my phone. I downloaded and installed my USB driver, but i don't have a cable to make it work. I was hoping somehow I could get it to use bluetooth to talk to the phone, but I see no way to use the phone's internet on my system. My computer cooler uses mini-USB and my printer uses B-USB, my camera uses micro-USB, and my phone (Kyocera Strobe) uses some damned hybrid micro/mini-USB. It's like as wide as mini-USB, but not as thin as micro-USB, but not as thick as mini-USB. I've seen a convertor pack for USB that includes the adapter that fits my phone, but dam it's like half the price of the data kit itself from Kyocera. Stinking standards.. I'm kinda stuck for now. I was looking at the Alltel plans. Can you tell me what feature (Axcess plan) to add to my phone OC? I think the Strobe was considered a smart phone not sure..maby not. I just want to use my phones EVDO connection on my laptop, whether by USB or bluetooth communitcation, although bluetooth is by far preferred lol. My phone already has the OpenWave browser that came pre-installed.
