Allstate: 'Black box' recorders may become mandatory in new vehicles

My car ('05 Chevy) already has one and so do others, it's mentioned in a small paragraph in the very end of the owners manual. Oh, the sheriff can obtain a warrant and DL the info stored on it for an accident investigation and one more thing, it cannot be defeated the BCM won't let you start the car if you attempt to and oh, another thing each memory chip is coded to the car's VIN, don't think if you caused an accident you can run to the local junkyard and try to swap it, they will know..

this may happen, i won't be surprised

in related 'mandatory' to get insurance news, the medical insurance company my employer uses has told us that in the future they will require blood pressure, pulse, cholesterol screening in order to get health insurance

Those older ones only activate in a crash. The new ones are recording all the time.

We'll only cover you if you're healthy. The sick and the poor don't deserve good healthcare. It's the American way.

The industry has long wanted to charge drivers based on their driving habits, and each have had vehicles testing data collection devices for years.

my issue is with privacy, not whether they'll accept my business or not. this is why i think the issues are related (black box for cars, health screening for medical insurance), they are both privacy issues

The systems vary widely in how they work, some begin recording with sudden braking or acceleration, what it does is write data to the eeprom when a crash occurs, (airbag deployment) but it HAS to have a means of having the data available beforehand so an algorithm probably decides when to start gathering data so it can be saved after deployment. Looks like your right about the new specification though, it will function much like a "black box" in a plane and record a given loop of time what's happening with the vehicle, (speed, throttle position, brake application, ect.)..

Gotta love big government.
(Where in the constitution is this authority granted to the federal government again?)

You can bet your ass that before long (if not already) the government and/or corporations will be able to get access to this data without warrants for purposes of control and revenue generation.

These kinds of invasions to privacy are designed to be abused as early and as often as possible.

Defeat the box, and it will invalidate your insurance policy...

Since I don't have insurance, it doesn't affect me personally. Since any reasonable person cares more about rights than supporting a corrupt industry anyway, I doubt it would stop too many people. In fact, the people no longer making insurance agents rich just might get them to push for a change as well.

This all presumes the box is defeated in such a way as to be obvious. Hackers are a tricky lot.

Guess I'm in the minority as i can see the positives of having them. I also see the negatives (which most of you have pointed out). get pulled over for "speeding" when you actually werent? Blackbox records the speed so have some method to pull data and see to get out of the tickets (assuming you actually werent speeding). Or same for accidents. I had a friend get rear ended at a stop light and lost her 1 year old child due to it. Guy said he tried to brake but the brakes didnt work. Simple black box and the cops could have found that he didnt even try to brake till he was less than 50 feet from her (traveling at 40mph). Instead it took 2 months of investigation, subpoena for phone records and other crap to find out he didnt brake cause he was texting and not looking at the road. So i guess i can see both sides. one side if properly used could be beneficial. but if not properly used is obviously bad.

I like the black box. I already had one car pwned by some douchebag and it will happen again eventually. I want hard data showing it is their fault.

I also think the black box idea is long overdue. There are way too many bullshit tickets that have been written up or accidents where the person at fault was lying. A black box in this day and age of cheap electronics should cost no more than about $50 to make and could easily save you from hundreds from those BS tickets/accidents.

Wow I thought they all had these now.

GPS is absolutely the future as well, tracking movement of your car, sold to you as cheaper insurance.

This can protect you, though, should things go to court.

I'm strongly considering a $200 dashcam device from Amazon (cheaper ones are no good) that turns itself on automatically when car starts and continually runs just so that I know if I get in an accident nobody will be able to screw me. More just for fun than anything, though 🙂

the greenies are want to replace the 'flat' gasoline tax with a 'per mile' tax, they'll use the BB info to debit your bank account directly for how many miles you drive

the BB would be bad for that. just go in and read the mileage . I do suspect that GPS are going to be mandatory then they will do as you said. a Per mile tax. once cars get around 70+mpg (all cars and not just a few) they will switch.
