I've read XP won't allow more than 4096 bytes/cluster for RAID 1. Is this true? (NOT just default setting, but even possible). Well, I tried. Formatted 2 WD SE16 CAviar 250 GB HHD's as "dynamic" and 32 kb cluster size file allocation. I'd like the 32 kb because I work a lot on photos and graphics. Should be a better balance for performance vs. space I think. I'm not too worried about space. I've got 2 external HD's for backups and DVD-r's up to my chin.
Once installing XP Pro, prompt said I "MUST" format drives, either quick format NTFS or standard NTFS. There was no way to leave drives in 32 kb.
My question... Can I re-allocate now that I'm running without losing my install on BOTH (losing on one is okay, right) HHD's? Also, could I re-install to just ONE HHD and then format 2nd (both to 32 kb of course!) to "mirror" first and keep 32 kb clusters?
I saw this post: http://forums.extremeoverclocking.co...d.php?t=222571
but I'm kinda a n00b who was a power Mac user his whole life. I've also read the Micky$oft site pages about this but doesn't say if you can ACTIVELY change a formatted disk. I don't know command line much. So, I understand I can format a NEW drive by:
start > run > command > format [drive letter]: /a:32K
But what about an already installed hard drive? I don't know how to do this. I can re-install everything, I don't mind that if that's what it'll take. I'd appreciate feedback, since I guess just trying all this might waste time to find that 'no matter what, XP won't allow more than 4 kb clusters for RAID 1'. I dunno? I spent 3 hours formatting 2 x 250 GB HD's into 'dynamic' 32K clusters to have it wasted in XP install already.
Thanks in advance. Cheers.
