Allergy: defective immune system?

I have been allergy sufferer for past 7 years and have been puzzled a bit.

The thing is, I wasnt allergic until like 7 years ago when it all started. No, I didnt move to a new area. I had lived there for 5 years when I first got symptons of hay fever.

So my immune system just decided to attack foreign things overnight?

So many people have allergies so it is not some isolated incident.

is it a "disease?"

defective DNA? Immune system? 🙁

Allergies are indictive of an overactive immune system if my memory serves me right.lol,it's a pain but I rather like knowing that my immune system has leet fragging skills🙂

I've known several people that develop allergies later on in their life. My wife and her mother didn't start getting really bad reactions to tree pollens until they hit their early 20's.

wish i had taken more biology classes to understand what makes the system overactive... maybe protein coating on the white cells or something...

I think it's pretty complicated.. I don't think that just because you have allergies, you're any less likely to get sick from a virus or bacteria.... It just means that your immune system decides to frag something that isn't really harmful.

IMO, I do indeed think that you could consider it defective.. It's not working properly, so...

IO have had mild allergies since I moved to Sacramento... never had them in Santa Cruz. They're not that bad though, pretty much jsut a stuffy nose sometimes.

Allergies are caused when your immune system thinks that things (like dust, pollen, whatever) are dangerous (as if they were bacteria or a virus) even when they're not. It's really an over-reaction by your immune system.

I got it when I moved to Sacramento as well.... maybe indicative of how crappy air is down here at the valley?

Yup.

I only got them as an adult as well. (in my 20's)

had allergy since a kid to all sorts of stuff, pollens, animal fur, seafood etc even had asthema fortunatel that cleared up but now i have eczema which is closely related to asthema. i'd like to think that my immune system is overactive rather than just defective 😉
