Allergy breakthrough

I only caught part of the promo about something that is really supposed to help the millions of allergy sufferers. Anyone else see this promo?

Probably just a bunch of hype because I can't find anything on the 'net about a breakthrough.

The story is probably just gonna say something like, "avoid allergens".

They have invented an air tight suit that you can wear that prevents all allergens from enterning your body. It does have some side effects that they are still working out though.

Our idea will help millions of allergy sufferers....

if you have allergies... just stop breathing.

If it was groundbreaking news, they would break into your regularly scheduled programming. If they promo tonight's news with a vague stary about something sensational, then it is time to flip over to your regularly scheduled Seinfeld re-run.

So it's going to affect every allergy out there, from pollen to bee stings to peanuts?

I'd settle for a major breakthrough in pollen allergies. The OTC crap does nothing for me. I've thought about going back to allergy shots but I have a phobia of needles. 🙁

What about prescription crap? does that help?

ABC NEWS

April 6, 2006 ? It's an annual rite of passage for those who suffer from seasonal allergies: sinuses so blocked it's difficult to breathe, a recurring headache, a feeling of constant "pressure" on the face.

But for people like Michele Lynch who suffer from chronic sinusitis, allergy season seems to last all year. "I couldn't work. You can't breathe. I couldn't sleep," she said.

Lynch, 24, had suffered from sinusitis most of her life ? the result of abnormal bone growth in her sinuses. But a few weeks ago, doctors suggested she try a radically new treatment that's been available in the United States only since December.

The procedure, called balloon sinuplasty, opens sinus cavities the same way doctors open clogged arteries when they do a balloon angioplasty.

"This is a wonderful, wonderful advantageous technology for patients," said Dr. Peter Catalano of the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.

With the patient under a general anesthesthetic, doctors thread a guide wire equipped with a tiny balloon into the nostrils and up to the blockage. They then inflate the balloon about a quarter of an inch ? just enough to open the passageway. The balloon is then deflated and withdrawn.

After the sinuplasty, the sinus openings become significantly wider. In most cases, they stay that way, because the balloon has actually fractured the bones and spread them apart ? all without pain.

"The bones in the sinus drain are very soft, thin bones. Extremely malleable and therefore there is no pain," Catalano said.

And in many cases, balloon sinusplasty appears to be more effective than conventional surgery.

"It allows for no incisions or cutting. There's no bruising or swelling," said Dr. Howard Levine of the Cleveland Nasal/Sinus Center.

Which means Michelle Lynch was back at work the next day.

"This procedure made a huge difference in my life," she said. "Since the procedure I can't say I've even had a headache, and breathing is so clear."

This story was reported by World News Tonight correspondent John McKenzie.

That actually looks cool as hell. If it works half as well as she described point me to the back of the line.

While it may cure chronic sinus infections and blockages, it does nothing for allergies. You'll still get the runny nose and itchy eyes. What it will stop or limit are the infections caused by blocked sinuses.

I'm completely OK with that.

Having both nostrils functional all of the time would be a new phenomenon for me.

Again, unblocking the sinuses will NOT stop your nose from stuffing up due to allergies. Most of that is caused by a combination of inflammation of the membranes and mucus production both in the nasal cavity and sinuses. Opening up the passage to the sinus cavity from the nasal cavity will do nothing to prevent or ease those symptoms.

The girl in the video got relief because she suffered from chronic sinus infections, not bad allergies. When you have chronic sinus infections, your nasal passages close up as well because of inflammation due to infection.

In other words, you do not breath through your sinuses. Therefore opening them up will not help you breath better UNLESS your sinuses are chronically infected and causing your nasal passages to swell up and close.
