Allergies help

Hi,
I am allergic to dogs and cats (among other animals). I think I'm allergic to their saliva, so indirectly to their hair. When I'm around cats especially, I begin to choke up, my nose begins to leak and the famous red eyes. I have an asthma pump but it's expired so I'm helpless right now. I'm gonna get a new one after my finals.

I was wondering do any of the off-the-shelf products like Claritin help for animal allergies? One of my friend is having a BBQ tomorrow and I'd like to go but I don't want to have trouble breathing because of his cat. It's not gonna be hot enough to stay outside the whole time, so...

Am I out of luck? heh Thanks.

Claritin-D works well for all UR allergies. Get some over the counter, take about 4 hours before you go, and you should be good. Of course, my uncle is the VP for Schering-Plough, so I'm a little biased.

Cool, I'll check at the convenience store accross the street if they have them.

DrNoobie, what does antihistamine do? I remember I was taking Hismanals when I was young and I see that word used in many allergy products.

I don't see Claritin and Benadryl talking specifically about the symptoms that are related to asthma (choked throat).

One more thing... can I take alcohol if I take Claritin or Benadryl? Because we're having this BBQ to celebrate our graduation from University. If I can't drink with those pills, we'll just head directly to McDonald's and then to the pub instead.

They work by blocking the action of histamine receptors in the skin, nose, blood vessels and airways. Histamine is a natural chemical produced by the body in response to foreign organisms, but sometimes the body releases too much histamine and this produces the allergic reaction.

Histamine is what causes red eyes and running nose. It's a product from your immune system. Antihistamine of course would prevent that.

Yea, alcohol is fine. 🙂

Claritin D != Claritin Reditabs
Claritin D != Claritin

Make sure you get Claritin D. 🙂 The regular claritin and reditabs don't do jack crap for me, but D nails my alergies for a few hours.

Noted.
I just hope it works out, because if I begin to choke and have to leave, I'll ruin everyone's dinner... becaue I don't have a car so it means someone will have to bring me home.

Take the pill an hour before you leave for their place.

If you're having athsma problems and don't have any albuterol, go buy something like Primatine Myst as a temporary safeguard. And for God's sake, go to the doctor and get some drugs. Claritin-D = aaawweesome.

Claritin and/or Benedryl? will help. Neither of them may completely take care of it though depending on the severity of your allergy to his cat. As far as alcohol goes, the warning on the label will probably tell you not to or that it may cause drowsiness and in many cases it does. So, yes you can probably drink alcohol but it might make you more drowsy than normal.
