I've always taken allegra for my allergies, but one day I ran out and picked up over the counter claritin to hold me over.

Which has most people found to be better in relieving year round allergies? Is the OTC claritin the same as the prescription? Or is it a lower dosage?

After having used RX Claritin, RX Allegra, and OTC Claritin I can say they all work well for me. The OTC Claritin is identical to the RX version, though is cheaper, packaged differently, etc. I use it no problem as needed as does my roomate. Who keeps stealing mine. Asshole.

G'luck, talk to doctor.

Although neither work well for me, Allegra works better than Claritin.

Statistically they are equivalent, however there is something knows as individual variation.

Means one works better for some than the other, or both the same, or neither work. It is impossible in advance to say who will respond best to a particular med.

I have to take my allegra pretty much every day, or else I will usually regret it later. Is there anything wrong with popping a claritin a day before any problems arise or is that not recommended?

Being able to take claritin instead of allegra would be WAY cheaper. But allegra is this big fat orange pill and claritin is this dinky little white pill, so I'm wondering why the difference.

Claritin's considered to be one of the safest medicines out there. No reason you can't take Claritin the day before you expect to have problems. It's unique in that it is chemically unable to ever cause drowsiness, since it can't enter the central nervous system. Plus, it works much better for me than that Zyrtec crap I'm being prescribed now *sighs*
