All you guys with CPU temperature/fan speed/weather/network status/processor usage/etc. on your desktop - question?

Do you actually look at that stuff, or do you actually use your PC? Or do you just hit "show desktop" every few minutes to check on your current CPU usage?

my desktop too crowded with AOL, Realplayer, Bonzi buddy, and comet curser to worry about meaningless things like CPU usage.

Speaking of Bonzi buddy, I once actually had the misfortune of meeting someone stupid enough that she actually thought it was cool, and refused my offer to remove it from her PC.

Yes, she was that stupid.

"Why doesn't my printer work?"
"you plugged the USB cable into an RJ-34 jack"

"What's USB?"

Note: conversations w/ her that sounded like this were NOT limited to computer or technology topics.

I use Motherboard Monitor and keep my CPU temp in my task bar (not really needed, it's a P4). I find it usefull as sometimes applications will go bonkers and run up my cycles and temp. Got as hot as 46 degrees... once...

I actually use my PC and look at the stuff. :p

I have it set up so that maximized windows only fill the area excluding my top and bottom horizontal bars, so I can see everything no matter what I have open. And I use 4 virtual desktops - keeping IRC/AIM/ICQ/chat-related stuff on one, web browsing/e-mail on another, graphics/web editing on another, and the last for any misc junk. So usually none of my desktops are particularly cluttered. :)

My status bar only shows up when I move my mouse to the upper right corner of the screen. the rest of the time, it's a 2-pixel-wide line extending halfway down the side of my screen, completely out of the way, until I need it, at which point it's right there, on top of any windows that may be located there.

I got my coolmon just running necessities. Incoming/Outgoing traffic and other network details, uptime, and ram usage.

I'm asking that too.
So my CPU temp jumped to 48.5C........ and ...... uhhh ........ so what? It still works.
CPU usage = 5% ...... and .....

i'm not overclocking my comp or nothing so the temps and fan speed don't bother me

i'm using Statbar right now and the thing i keep my eye on is CPU usage and available ram. If the RAM gets low then its like a heads up to close some programs or time for a reboot.

and oh yeah the disk space usage thing is useful too.

Well I like to know what's going on , so I use CPUCool. It monitors different things, cpu usage, available ram, temps etc. I monitor those items using digital read-outs on the taskbar.

It's particularly useful in photoshop....After messing with a pic for a while, I can be down to 20mb of ram out of 512. Time to save the changes, get back the ram. Cpu usage can tell you at a glance if something is wrong....Cpu temps can show up an airflow problem immediately. I keep the taskbar on top all the time.....monitor the figures just like I would a speedometer in a car.

I just installed CoolMon last week on my computer. I like it, because unlike MBM, which I also have running, it shows you both the mobo and the CPU temp. Since this computer is being turned into a server soon, I dont have very many fans, and I am trying to search for the best fan placement, so both of those temperatures matter. I also like how it shows the IP address (just in case mine decides to change unexpectedly at some time and ruins my server-ness)

BTW, does anyone know why sometimes the CoolMon display disappears every now and then and wont show itself unless I right-click the tray icon?

Sure, I got MBM running my cpu temp in my taskbar...also i have my network connection window running in taskbar so i can click on it periodically and see how much bandwidth i've been using (packets receieved/sent). It's just something that's interesting to me.

I use Statbar
which stays running at the top with stats and quicklaunches and other goodies so I can always see it
