I owned Frontlines: Fuel of War for over six months but never installed it due to the negative word of mouth. I recently noted some positive commentary about the latest version, so I finally installed it with the latest patches and am enjoying it quite a bit.
Being designed by the guys behind Desert Combat mod for BF1942 and BF2, it has most of the stuff that BF2 has, plus more. Jeeps, tanks, APC's, AA vehicles, choppers, planes, six different soldier classes, with independently selectable "special abilites" (like being able to call in airstrikes, or being able to use drones, etc.). There is a LOT of depth to it. I've been playing for a few weeks now I haven't even had a chance to check out two of the special abilities classes yet. Despite the many available options, I still find it simple to play, compare to say, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.
Most of the maps are quite a bit more detailed than BF2. Some are epic in scale... I find the Frontlines game mechanic does indeed keep the gameplay focussed despite the size of some of the levels.
Of course the downside is that the player base really isn't where it should be. I find there are about a hundred people spread across 5-6 servers each night I play. It's still easier to find a good match than it is in Far Cry 2... The longer we have to wait for BF3, the greater the possibility that those numbers can be bumped up.
If you have tried it and didn't like is, I'd be interested to know why.
If you play it on a regular basis, let me know where, maybe we can squad up.
