One was a vaccine which prevented anyone from getting the disease. If you can't get it, you can't transmit it. Thus, the disease is almost eradicated.

The other is a treatment for people with the disease that lets you live with the disease longer, but you can still transmit it. Thus the disease rages on.

I heard that they found a cure and are currently in a 2 year test environment in Africa. Don't hold me to it but I read it somewhere.
