All the talk about HDTV and we seem to forget something

I don't recall the specifics, but to me HD isn't all about resolution.

Sure resolution is great, but what really floors me when viewing/watching HD is the color. I believe it has something like twice the color depth.

When setup well it really does look like a window - but I believe that isn't really because of resolution...more of a function of accurate color.

thoughts?

The HD colorspace is less than standard NTSC. 🙂 This being said, they make much better utilization.

I think the biggest forgotten component is bandwidth. That's what makes it look so much more beautiful than DVD on ED type displays.

It's possible that tvs with higher resolution generally have better color because they cost more.

True, but I believe the ATSC standard actually allows for more color depth. All the extra bandwidth for HD isn't just for resolution. The display only displays what you give it.

Its been a while since I've looked at the technical details though. But to me the difference between a great DVD transfer and HD is the color above the resolution.

You've been watching crappy TVs all your life?

Seriously, there are awesome-looking CRT SDTVs. Most anything from the Sony Wega or whatever Samsung's top line was, right before they moved to HDTV. Of course, with CRTs there's a lot of tweaking to get the picture perfect.

That's the biggest advantage to LCD/DLP/Plasma. No issues with gun alignment, color purity, EM fields, or the placement of magnets aroudn the yoke. You take it out of the box and only have to change minor software settings to make it look perfect.

Actually I haven't been watching crappy TVs.

It just seems to me that color is much, much better with HD than SD. I thought I recalled the reason why, but it escapes me.

all 3 of my HDTVs are calibrated on both SD and HD inputs and HD is significantly better color wise. could be just MHO.
