Scary. A non nuclear conventional warfare world war 3 could break out with nuclear powers at any moment and we could be reduced to relying on only our regular, non super carriers to carry us against our enemies' carriers. All 1-2 of them.

Obama is selling us out to the Chinese and North Koreans. Expect a sneak attack on South Korea and Japan.

Also something something Muslims attacking Israel.

I love it when I get the newest tinfoil hat style at tinfoilhats.cm

Are they really all that super anymore now that there are ten of them?
Force projection yes. No one and nothing else can put 60+ combat aircraft off a coast and deliver ordnance up to a few hundred miles away.

Clearly this is because Obama plans to station them off our coast and prevent a Trump presidency.

I'm in a food pantry and we get people in that are like "I love ramen, do you people have ramen you could give me?" and of course we give them the packets. But just for once I wish I could dine at a REAL ramen shop with a bowl full made by the very best. Noodles fried and packed into plastic with a flavor pouch just isn't the same.

Yes - cruise missiles and drones can partially do the job, but they can't send a message like parking 100,000 tons of sovereign steel off another country's coast.

Think of super carriers more of a geopolitical tool nowadays than a weapon of war (which they still are).

Yep. We need to park our super carriers off of China or Russia's coast to calm things down and make them come to their senses.

Wow. All ten are in port doing maintenance right now. How do gaps like this happen?

Granted we probably have USS Wasp carriers deployed right now, which with the F35b have gained a significant amount of capability.

"Maintenance"

Do you really think that it's maintenance or that there could be an extreme risk to national security right now that they are looking to defend against?

It's because we've been beating the shit out of the carrier force for more than a decade now. If you were to ask the navy the ideal number would be 14-15 but the current defense budget doesn't allow for a force of that size.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/where.htm -> info on where they are now looks like the George HW Bush (CVN-77) was late getting out of the yard to start its next deployment which is why there is a gap now.

https://news.usni.org/2016/01/19/u-...an-designed-to-create-sustainable-naval-force a USNI piece on the deployment plan.

Its also important to realize that not forward deployed doesn't mean there are not carriers that can put to sea on fairly short notice from their home ports.

Gaps like this happen because we have a clown asshole leaving office in 15 days. He's the Commander in Chief, he's the sole asshole responsible for it.

Yeh, it's such a travesty. And it's all Obama's fault. Everything.

Once Repubs kill the ACA & other social spending we'll have plenty of money for a whole bunch of feel good maritime chest beating. Cuz freedumb & shit. All the usual.
