Not surprised. Europeans are relatively civilized, has always been my feeling.

AFAIK I can't replace the battery in my Samsung Galaxy S9, which ticks me off. All my other smartphones past and present make it super easy to replace the battery.

Edit: Well, I just checked. Evidently it is possible, however it's not at all easy:

Pay someone to do it? I replaced my Honor 8 battery by using my hair dryer to soften the glue.

The downside to this is far more lithium batteries being tossed into the trash vs properly recycled by repair facilities. I haven't had a modern phone that was replaced due to battery issues.

And, Apple's answer will be some encrypted security locked battery so it will be of no benefit to "right to repair" folks using no name dangerous knockoff batteries.

Why wouldn't they be recycled?

Why wouldn't they be recycled?

Because the process to recycle them isn’t convenient.
That being said, I think the last time I was in a Best Buy they had a recycle station and I think it took batteries as well.

They need to be easily replaceable… “Going camping” and having 3 extra batteries individually sealed waterproof has been a godsend at times

I picked up a Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 3 Enterprise for work during one of Amazon's sales deals and one of the reasons it won out over any of the other tabs and pads was due to its easily replaceable battery. Simply love everything else about it. Wrapped it in a shockproof case and It's like a Timex watch in so many ways: "Takes a lick'in and keeps on tick'in".

Honolulu conducts annual hazardous waste collection weeks that I take advantage of as my house is full of battery powered devices, more than I care to list in detail come to think of it. And especially so in the home emergency bug out bag that needs to be PM'd on a regular basis.

I feel like there are plenty of places to dispose of electronics for free or a nominal fee: municipal programs, trade-ins when you buy new stuff, Best Buy.

Heck, for Best Buy, I've brought over random stuff, like old parts that aren't worth anything, and they'll add them to their recycling collection without any fee (at least in my experience in MA).

Yeah, it's a non-issue unless you're in the middle of nowhere.

Fucking amen to this. Samsung, Motorola, Apple, Google, everyone. I'll take a mm thicker phone for this very consumer friendly feature. I appreciate the EU when they pass good regulations like this. They are not afraid to go after Google and also some social media companies, they fight for privacy, they are working on Apple's anti-competitive monopoly power practices as well. Put these giant companies in line!
