All right, I'm stumped . . . Internet connection works on laptop but . . .

XMan

Lifer
. . . not on desktop? WTH? Same ISP, same phone line. All the network settings look to be the same. Could the ISP be having issues with my modem? It's a USR Sportser 56K, which I thought was the Ford Taurus of modems . . .

Anybody got any ideas? I'm tired of looking at this itty bitty screen.

No error message, it just says "verifying user name and password" on the desktop, but never logs in. Ever since I moved in the desktop hasn't been able to connect to any ISP; I dialed long-distance to my old ISP, tried to hook up, tried my new one, even tried Microsoft's ISP finder, which didn't work . . .

This might be a last ditch effort, but do you have dirty lines? Contact the phone company and have them do a line test.

How about turning on the setting "bring up terminal window after connecting" so that you can type in your login/password manually and see what's happening? Do the same on the laptop, maybe it'll show something...

Phone company did a line test, said everything was fine. "We don't guarantee the quality of a data connection so long as your voice connection is noise-free. Your line is noise free. If you'd like, we can set you up with a DSL line."

Me: "I can't DSL where I live, otherwise I wouldn't be suffering with a modem."

Them: "Oh, well, you're screwed then." 😉

I got it working, somehow. Don't know how. Unplugged my modem from COM1 to COM2, then rebooted. It works fine now - I hooked up at 42666, a heck of a lot better than I ever got in Indiana.
