I am looking for an all purpose knife I can carry in my car and on myself when needed. I would like it to be compact with the primary focus on the quality of the blade. Any additional tools (corkscrew etc) are a plus but not needed.

I found this one which looks like a good match but I have no idea which brands are good.

Is Buck a good brand?

you say all purpose knife but then mention a corkscrew... are you looking for an all purpose KNIFE or a multipurpose TOOL that has a knife?

I am looking for a folding knife that will last for the next 5-10 years. If it happens to have some other small tools on it (like the one I linked to) that is ok as long as the blade is quality.

I need something smallish that I can toss in a pocket or a glove compartment. I will be mainly using it for everyday tasks and camping.

Anyone have any opinions of Buck or the Buck knife I linked to?

When you say quality of the blade, do you want something extremely stainless (more brittle) or something extremely strong (more prone to corrosion)? Spyderco, Benchmade, SOG and Cold Steel all make great knives out of high quality steel, but there are other good companies out there (those are just off the top of my head). The most important factors in determining the quality of a knife like the one you're describing are the steel it's made out of (and how it's treated) and the quality of the locking mechanism.

Buck is a good brand.

If you want a corkscrew I recommend a Victorinox(Swiss Army knife brand). You can get one of them for pretty cheap and they last a long time.

I own more Buck knives than I do Gerber knives. A Buck knife is a quality knife, but I think Gerbers are a little bit better quality. That is just my opinion. I'd recommend a Buck #110 Folding Hunter. You can use the back of the blade to pop beer caps, you can cut up snacks with it. I've heard that if you should find an unattended deer that has just been hit by a vehicle, that you can dress that deer quickly and easily with it. I like venison.

The blade can be easily deployed with one hand by holding the blade between your fingers and using the weight of the handle to flick it open with a snap of the wrist. Then let the handle slide into your hand.

sorry, i had to laugh at that.

i have the Gerber Ridge and i love it. just slips very easily into my pocket anywhere i go. Teflon coated blade is a plus, though its a little difficult to hold onto for tough cutting tasks due to lack of a real gripping surface.

Kershaw, Spyderco, Camillus, Wenger, Victorinox, Kabar, and SOG all make really good knives at the price level you're considering. You can also find a few Benchmades such as the Griptillian/Mini-Grip for that money. My personal favorites right now are Kershaw and Spyderco - I carry a Kershaw Storm II (30 bucks...had it for four years now), a Spyderco Native in VG-10 (40 bucks...stay away from the SV30 version of this. Chips too easily), and a Becker BK-11 Necker w/Mini-TechLok (this also cost me about 30 bucks).

Gerber used to be a good knifemaker but their quality has gone to crap. Buck also, IMO, is nearly the same story. Some of their knives, like the 110 are still awesome but most of the new stuff just plain sucks.

Wanna hear my suggestion on this? First, check out http://bladefroums.com and look around. Reviews abound as do opinions on knives (along with a bit of good ol' brand-whoring...overlook that part :p ) and you'll soon have LOADS of useful information floating around in your head. Secondly go to Walmart and check out their better knives. You may also consider a hunting/camping store...hell, anywhere that has knives setup so you can see and handle them before buying. Third, unless you can get a good deal in a store or like to patronize a particular brick'n'mortar store, online is the way to go. I prefer http://newgraham.com as they're only located 2 hours away and have great prices. Other sites to buy from include http://1sks.com and http://eknifeworks.com

Kershaw, get on of the spring assist ones.

Wal-Mart carries them.

They're good blades.

edit: belive it or not, but sometimes those are issued to military personell as items of use.

Speak for yourself :p Everyone who has been issued a multitool in my squadron has gotten a Leatherman which works for me because I like them better anyways.

decide on a blade length and then i can give you recommendations. some here have already given some good ones. i find that i dont like to spend too much on an EDC (everyday carry knife), as its likely to get beat up, and maybe even lost. thus what you are looking for is the best bang for the buck imo

the Benchmade Monochrome has fantastic N690 steel for only like $35
Camillus EDC has AUS8 steel which is pretty good for about $35 and is lighter, comes in 154CM steel version for about $55 which is supposedly much better although may not take as good of an edge

Kershaw Vapor is also another good one

in smaller sizes i like the Kershaw Leek, the SOG Twitch II - neither of those have super special steels but decent

theres many many others that are deserving of mention that im getting too lazy to list

as mentioned earlier, there are certain steels that are definitely better than others, but there is no best, there is a tradeoff between strength, brittle-ness, corossion resistance, ability to create a super-sharp edge, and ability to maintain a super-sharp edge
