460,000 PT Cruisers Recalled
Fri Aug 9, 4:57 PM ET
By ED GARSTEN, AP Auto Writer

DETROIT (AP) - Almost every PT Cruiser ever built since going into production a little over two years ago is being recalled.

The only cars not included in the recall are 2003 model year vehicles that went into production in July.

More than 460,000 PT Cruisers, every one built for the 2001 and 2002 model years, are being recalled to repair problems that could cause fuel leaks, the Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler AG announced Friday.

The PT Cruiser has been one of the most successful vehicles in the Chrysler Group's lineup since it was introduced in 2001.

Of the 464,315 built in the 2001 and 2002 model years, 425,083 had been sold through the end of July, according to Chrysler spokesman Marc Henretta.

Sales of the retro-looking vehicle are up 5 percent through July, compared with the first seven months of 2001.

Despite the breadth of the recall, one analyst says nothing should be inferred about the overall quality of the popular vehicle. "It's a bum part that may or may not reflect a real world problem," said Jim Hall, vice president of the automotive consulting firm AutoPacific Inc.

However, it could be a sign of quality issues with the supplier that provided the part, Hall said.

Chrysler would not reveal the name of the supplier, as is customary when announcing a recall.

If a spark should come in contact with leaking fuel, it could ignite a fire, Chrysler spokeswoman Ann Smith said.

Officials discovered the leak following a government crash test in May, she said.

Chrysler subsequently conducted an internal investigation into the leaks before issuing the recall.

There are no known incidents or customer complaints related to the problem, DaimlerChrysler said. The company will install a secondary seal to the top of the fuel pump module.

A quarter of the 464,315 vehicles also will be recalled for a separate problem with the underhood fuel supply line, which may rub against the air conditioning service port.

That also could result in a fuel leak, the automaker said.

There have been no injuries or accidents connected with the problem, Smith said.

Owners will be notified of the recall by mail.

In trading on the New York Stock Exchange ( news - web sites), DaimlerChrysler shares rose 40 cents to $43.90.

A + B + C = X

If X is lower than the cost of a recall, they don't do one.

I guess that didn't happen with this according to the article.

It says "There are no known incidents or customer complaints related to the problem, DaimlerChrysler said."
