[edit] I did not write the below story. It was sent to me by my mother, who received it from someone else.[/edit]

Everyone has been guilty of looking at others their own age and thinking...surely I cannot look that old.........Im sure you've done the same......You may enjoy this short story....

While waiting for my first appointment in the reception room of a new dentist, I noticed his certificate, which bore his full name. Suddenly, I remembered that a tall, slender, handsome boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 40 years ago. Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding, gray-haired, overweight man with the deeply lined face was far too old to have been my classmate. After he had examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended the local high school.

Yes, he replied.

When did you graduate? I asked.

He answered, In 1957.

Why, you were in my class! I exclaimed.

He looked at me closely and then asked, What did you teach?

How true. When you notice the Doctor, Dentist, Lawyer, etc. are all younger than you it is a wake up call.

But these are the GOOD years!

Then there is that phenomena of waking up one afternoon

, and realizing that you DO NOT have all the answers and some of the ones you do have, are just wrong.....:D
OH and how about... laughing (saying something/some mannerism) in a way that is strangly reminiscent of a RELATIVE of yours... The Horror... the horror :disgust::D

Yes, I am 35. I didn't write this story, but something similar has happened to me. :p

Besides, can't you tell the story was written by a woman?

anyway, it'll be a loooong time before I have to worry about aging :)

That's what I thought. It happens far quicker than you think.

GeeeeZ! Amused One, if you didn't write the story, then make it clear in the first post, please. I was still trying to figure out whether you wrote it. On the one hand, I figured you were younger because you once said you were in your thirties. On the other hand, the way you write sometimes suggests an older guy. However, the following made me shake my head and think you couldn't possibly have been the one who wrote that:

"Suddenly, I remembered that a tall, slender, handsome boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 40 years ago."

That is definitely a woman talking right there. Only a woman or a gay guy would ever describe a man like that. By the way, I would have been attracted to him, as I like tall, slender, and handsome boys, except they should be men by now. :Q :p

Seriously though, I'm soooooooo afraid of getting old. I want to look as young as some famous people when I reach my sixties. I want to look very young and healthy. If my bones get too weak and my body so wrinkled, it would be what I always fretted. :( But I'm determined to stay strong and look young, regardless of my age. That's my motto. :D

So I sometimes write like an old fart, eh? :p

Those 60 something stars look that good because of surgery. If you've got $10,000 to spend on a face lift every 5 years or so, you can look like that too. Just stay away from Michael Jackson's doctor. Oh, and William Shatner's doctor too.

LOL! No, I don't want to resort to that ever. I don't like plastic surgery. :( I want to stay naturally young and age with grace. :D

William Shatner has cosmetic surgery? :Q Really? I couldn't tell.

Why do you think he looks like he's straining to take a sh!t all the time now? He has had a face lift (or multiple face lifts) and gained weight after, giving him that look. Look at the shape of his eyes, as well.

Ok, some of the Rules I've managed to keep in my way along the path....

Eat well, but not foolishly.
Eating with someone is more preferable to eating alone.
Relax and enjoy the view along the way.
Friends are friends, not emotional punching bags.
Being truthful once is easier than remembering which lie you've left hanging out there.
Don't sweat the small stuff.... or the big stuff either for that matter as no one takes any of it with them.
Babies crying are not an annoyance.
If "it" sounds good, shut up and listen to "it", quit talking about "it".
Let the other guy into your lane , signal or not. He may have one hand over a gaping wound and be rushing to the Emergency Room.... so what if his bandage is a cell phone and the gaping wound is his ear....

Have fun, this is the big time, there is no dress rehersal....

My Mom is nearing sixty and I swear to God she is an immortal alien or something -- she does not even look 40, and a GOOD 40. I hope I have her luck :)

All of You Will Some Day Face the Cold Hard Truth of Aging

As if I'm not facing it every day! I turned 23 not long ago, but I don't feel like I'm young. I guess I'm rapidly getting older. Every day I wake up, I feel how my life fades away quickly. I think about how short my life is going to be every day. Heck, I say it to myself, man, in like just 40 to 50 years you'll be all dead! Or even lots sooner, the first one is even the best scenario!

I remember when I was 6, I (really) believed that I'm never going to die and I thought people would find a cure, a medicine that would let them live like 10 times longer. I really didn't want to die ever. And I also thought that I had a freaking lots of time, I was wasting my time around, when I was a kid I thought that I'll not turn 20 until like 200 years from now (I think you know what I mean), that I had an eternity and that when I become 20 I'll be a strong and tough, big guy with lots of money oh that's for sure.

And now I look at myself. Oh man... Am I really 23? I feel almost the same little boy. So would you pls not post these 'aging' topics as they sting straight in the heart.

Ah....aging. It'll never happen to me. So I thought, so everyone thinks when they're young. Face the truth friends, it will happen. But there are things you can do to slow the process.....

The sun is your enemy....keep it off your face as much as possible. Tanning equals bad wrinkled skin when you get older. That cute well-tanned chick will be a wrinkled old lady well before it should have happened.

Your knees are the first to go...believe me. Avoid impact activities. Running is fun, but it kills your knees. Riding a bicycle is just as fun, and your knees will love you later on.

Protect your ears. Drive with the window up. Don't use ear-phones. Keep the volume down. You've only got two to last you all your life. Wear ear protection in loud places. Don't go to concerts.

Look at your feet. you only get two. Wear shoes that fit, not ones that look good. When the heels wear, replace the things. If you mess up your feet, you'll regret it later on.

There are a large number of these things I could list. Remember, no matter how good you feel right now, it'll change for the worst as you age. You can fight the aging process however...but it's not easy.

I once asked my cousin who is a doctor why people get old and said basically stuff just gets worn out.

I want to invent nanorobots that you inject into your body and they go around fixing the worn out stuff and make you live forever. :D

Actually, that's not true. Your body is constantly renewing itself on a cellular level. The problem is, that renewal process slows, and then stops. THEN stuff wears out.

Well, I'm sure he was giving me a layman's explanation. It was just a chat over dinner.

Also, some aspects of the human body do actually get worn out. Like the skin when it takes exposure to the sun, the damage is supposedly irreversible. Same for hearing. I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of them right now.

The thing that bothered me the most is, about 2 years or so ago, I realized no one ever thought I "was doing great for a young person", or that was no longer "the young guy at the company", or that people don't question me anymore because I'm too young.

Besides that, being 40 rocks! I find I have much more character and personality than I did 20 years ago. Age should equal experience, and experience equals character. I've found that at a large party, people enjoy being around other people who can tell good stories, can carry on intelligent conversations, or just be more interesting than the young, beautiful person who is boring. Since I can't be young and beautiful anymore, I try to be a good friend.

I know this is going to fall on deaf ears, but 20 years is not a very long time!
