Some of the responses are hilarious. Obviously, all of the entries are not legit. Do a search for "Opie" and look at the details.

some of the entries for other famous people obviously are not legit, either.
 
The people who work as servers need to spend one night delivering pizzas if they think their job is bad. I had a friend who could easily make 200 bucks on a 6 hour shift on a Friday or Saturday night. The most I ever made in an 8 hour shift delivering pizza was 100 bucks, and I had to use some of that for gas.

People need to stop complaining about tips that are good tips. As bitter as I got delivering pizzas I never complained about getting a 2 dollar tip. The only people I would complain about are the people who tipped 1 dollar or less and lived across town.

All and all servers have it pretty good. They have a job that requires no education and no technical knowledge, and yet they can make a good wage. I tip well for good service and tip VERY poorly for bad. If I didn't tip you it's probably because of something you did or didn't do. I know not everyone is like that and some people never have any intention of tipping at all, but getting bitter about it and acting like you don't make a good amount of money (and for the most part tax free because seriously what server actually reports all their tips) given that you don't have to spend 50k on an education to do it.
 
On average (slow and busy times), how many tables an hour does a waiter wait on? 3? 4? If each one tips ~$4, that's $12-16/hr + whatever the hourly wage is. Not bad if you ask me for pretty easy work.

Total bill / Tip amount / Percentage: $50.00 / $1.00 / 2%
What happened:
$1 dollar tip. Seems about right. I am a waitress after all, a job that could be done by a monkey, a child, or a Columbian peasant. If I want more than $1 then I should get a real job, perhaps even an education.
 
After browsing for a few minutes I think its just more fun to search by city name. Looking at the resteraunts they post from you know to be on your best customer behavior when you go there.
 
heh some are funny. they are bitching about %15 or so.

i read the forums once. they get even worse in there!

It's United States law that you make a minimum wage. In some states, you can be paid less (usually around $2.30 per hour) plus tips. If the amount you make in pay + tips is LESS THAN minimum wage, then the resturant HAS to make up the diffrence. So yes, all waiters/waitress make at least minimum wage.

It's their own fault if they don't stand up for what they deserve. Its called the local labor board.

And thats the basis of the argument, we shouldnt HAVE to pay tips for good service. That said I usualy tip between 20-25%. But if you are an ass I will pay to the penny in hopes you do get fired lol. If you cant fix the system you oughta at least use it, you know?
 
It would be better for consumers if tipping was a reward for a job well done, not a substitute for employers paying their employees a decent wage.

My problem with that is if we increased the wages for servers they would still expect 15+% tips. The problem is deep down they like it the way it is because they actually make more money. Any server worth a crap can make 15 bucks an hour when it's slow and over 20 per hour when it's busy. No restaurant is going to pay them that.

I like to look at who benefits from the current system, and it's the hospitality industry. They have a powerful lobby, and of course are in a great position to bribe elected officials with meals, etc.

So that's why the stupid, less than minimum wage model, made up for by direct payments to servers by consumers, exists.

It shouldn't even be called tipping, it's really a fee.

 
Yea, around here I heard something about them trying to institute an 18% mandatory charge for every party.... to me that's highway robbery in some instances.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I've tipped well above that in exceptional cases, but for the most part 15% is for middle-of-the-road service. Asking any more is rediculous, considering the education level that is required for that job.

Hell, I've stiffed people before. I have always looked young, and sometimes when you go into a restaurant, they will assume that you don't tip well because of your age / how you dress / etc. Because of this, you get stuck in some corner next to the bussing station and your server ignores you. Your food comes out wrong/cold/etc. Now what do they expect me to do? I leave a nice smiley face of pennies for people like that. On the other hand, if I get very good service, I go 20%.

This 18% mandatory thing is for the birds... I should be able to choose who I tip well and who I stiff... because they certainly make their decisions when I walk in the door.

Note: I've kinda grown out of the whole "looking young" thing, and I've gotten married and stuff, so it usually doesn't happen now... but occasionally I will still notice a disparity in service, and my tip reflects that.
