So i'm visiting Seoul & Tokyo & looking at all the flashy new PC hardware, one thing that struck me about the monitors in Seoul was that over here all the new ones are 1920x1080, and that will be the case in a couple of months when their newest models hit N America & Europe. I initially wanted to upgrade to the Samsung T260 w/ 1920x1200 rez & 16:10 aspect ratio, but apparently its been discontinued in 2008 by Samsung. They had the T260HD but that's already been discontinued here as well and retailers are just clearing stock in N America. All the new monitors from Samsung, LG, and others are 1920x1080, im guessing cause it saves them money and maybe they're trying to standardize things. Anyone hear otherwise? I much prefer the 1920x1200 for more real estate, but apparently that's a thing of the past.:(

It's 120 pixels, so I don't mind too much. I mean, I have a 1920x1200 24" and want even more vertical space, but if it helps to standardize things and improve performance (1920x120 fewer pixels to render), I'm for it.

Also, 16:9 games on consoles work pretty well, so whatever.

I have both a 24" 1920x1200 Dell 2408WFP and a 23" 1920x1080 NEC EA31WMi sitting in front of me. I prefer the slightly taller 16:10 screen, but the shorter NEC and lack of 120 vertical pixels really doesn't make much of a difference.

I'll take a good but inexpensive panel over a "perfect" 24" 16:10 any day.

The market seems to be going that route, no doubt from the ubiquity of modern consoles, console ports, and HDTVs. I hope that we see more and more quality 16:9 panels. At first they were all TN, but now there are some PVA and IPS panels cropping up. I think that quality per price and size is more important than the loss of 120 vertical pixels.

FWIW I just paid less for a Panasonic 32" 1080p TV with an IPS panel than I paid for my 2408wfp 8 months ago. I decided to go with size over my preferred 16:10 aspect ratio with this one, and I'm selling my Dell monitor on the FS/FT forum. The Panny is out for delivery, so I'll see how it compares to the Dell tonight.

Samsung's replacement for the T260HD is the P2770HD, a 27" screen, 50, 000:1 contrast ratio, and 1920x1080 rez, that sells for only $340(USD) in Seoul. I opted to get the T260HD for $330 instead (1920x1200, 10,000:1 contrast ratio). :p

Who would've thought 27" lcds would be available to the masses? 17" seems so miniscule nowadays but 10 years ago that's what everyone had.:0

It's all cutting corners. The less square the monitor, the smaller it actually is for the same diagonal dimension. 16:9 PC monitors is just another example of putting price over quality; it's a totally ridiculous aspect ratio to work with (not that 16:10 is much better).

Wow what a price. But the thing is what is its refresh rate ? The old tech 60hz or the new tech 120hz or 240hz

TV's already have 120hz and Sony Bravio is 240hz

There is no way I will ever game on a LCD until its 120hz. Maybe a better idea is to buy a 40 inch Sony Bravio HDTV for only and connect computer to that and have 240hz while I FPS game and watch videos

120hz and 240hz are WAY over rated, especially on an LCD where only the the moving stuff gets refreshed. The Refresh rate is what it important and most if not all are 8ms or under now which is better than 120hz if you look at it that way.

Your "new" tech still receives 60hz signals and interpolates frames. It is NOT actual 120hz or 240hz signals like on a CRT. Don't forget you are also limited by the LCD refresh speed as well.

Are the bezels getting thinner on these new LCDs?

Did you see any "no bezel" LCDs in the 22" to 27" range?

those refresh rates on the TV are not the same as monitors. there are only 3 or 4 monitors that have true 120hz. will somebody please explain to him how a 120hz monitor is different?

EDIT: see below

a little bit thinner, but the LCD is indeed beautiful. It has transparent corners and a touch of color at the bottom, i think its without a doubt the best looking LCD on the market, but performance and quality is a different matter entirely. Just read that there's a Samsung p2770 that is different from the p2770HD, 70, 000:1 contrast ratio instead of 50, 000:1, and 2ms instead of 5ms response time. It's only available in Japan atm unfortunetly.

When i asked my friend in the US to order the T260HD from newegg it told him its out of stock, so guess im just gonna wait until the P2770 gets released in the rest of the world. Funny how its available in Japan but not Korea (where Samsung is from).lol

For an LCD's response time to sync up with 120hz refresh rate it would need a continuous response time of 8ms (1/120 = 0.0083). Thing is, even 2ms TN panels spend a large amount of grey to grey (nearly 50% of the time in fact) above 10ms.
