All my hard drives benchmark the same!

I have a WD300 Velociraptor, 2 Seagate 1.5tb drives in mirrored array for My Documents and 2 250 gb wd drives in stripping array (just because I can) for my videos and movies.
And when I benchmark read scores in Everest Ultimate (The reading suite of tests) they all virtually benchmark the same with the mirrored array actually slightly faster in one test than the Velociraptor!!!

Whats up with that?

I'm not familiar with the Everest benchmark, & have rarely ever seen anyone or any reviewer use it.
My guess would be because it's not that great (though i could very well be mistaken).

How about trying CrystalDiskMark or HDTune?

I find those to be pretty good for comparisons.

These days the only difference you will really see between the velociraptors and modern standard 7200rpm drives would be the lower access times on the velocraptor, typically 7ms vs. 11-18ms. Otherwise, the transfer rates should be very close with modern 7200rpm drives.

OK here are some quick benchmarks using crystal benchmark, they seem similiar to the everest benchmarks I used:

Velociraptor C drive
Sequential Read : 104.267 MB/s
Sequential Write : 104.277 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 56.421 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 72.542 MB/s
Random Read 4KB : 0.932 MB/s
Random Write 4KB : 2.578 MB/s

Test Size : 100 MB

Seagate 1.5tb mirrored raid D drive

Sequential Read : 109.651 MB/s
Sequential Write : 104.723 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 46.496 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 82.457 MB/s

Random Write 4KB : 1.270 MB/s

Seagate seq. write equal to raptor?

Seagate random read 512K faster than stripping? random write faster than raptor??

Raptor random write 512k slower than both stripping and seaget 1.5tb ????

Stripping random write 4kb faster than raptor and seagate/

Why the hell did I spend $230 on a 300GB velociraptor when I could have bought 2 1.5tb drives on newegg free tax and shipping for $260 and created a super mirrored/stripping array for my computer?




can somebody help me understand the hype behind these raptors and explain why everyone is not screaming from the rooftops to buy seagate 1.5 tb drives?
