I was fortunate to get familiarized on the SR-25 before retiring from service. Shooting 7.62 from a somewhat similar AR frame spoiled me for life. I haven't acquired an AR type since retiring although I'd sure like to get my eyes sighting downrange on another SR if given the chance. It would be my personal choice as far as AR types go.

How's the availability of 7.62 at the moment?

I see what you did there. Headroom really is the issue between 7.62 NATO and the .308 Win along with shell casing thickness.

smart people stockpile when prices are low. I have a tiny stash of ammo but I cant afford long weekends at the range. The biggest issue is panic. Whenever a Democrat moves into office, when a mass shooting happens, when the economy takes a scary dive, morons go out and horde which does nothing except fuck up the market.
Its not like they're also buying hundreds of magazines and engaging in long term shootouts.

I've always purchased in bulk, generally through online retailers, although it's been several years now since I put in a big order. I used to try to keep at least a thousand rounds of my commonly shot calibers around, probably still have somewhere near that if the itch did strike to go down to the range.

Amazing how a thousand rounds can be used up in a short period of time though. Going through a 5 gal. bucket full of 20ga. reloads at the skeet/trap range gets burned up a lot quicker than expected every time I go out there. I recall taking an ammo can full of loose .22 long to the range with my nephew, set up these spinners downrange and started competing with him. Before I knew it that can was almost empty when we decided we were more hungry than trigger happy.

For sure. Back when I shot frequently, putting a thousand rounds down range in a session was not at all uncommon.

2-300 was probably the minimum.
