All-In-Wonder X800 XT vs Radeon X1600PRO

I'm still stuck with AGP, and I'm not going to upgrade untill DX10 and Vista comes out, so untill then I'm going to stick with something in this area.

Please don't tell me to get the Nvidia 7x00, I just don't have that type of money right now.

I did a lot of reading and in every test it looks like the X800XT beats the newer generation X1600 in every single benchmark.

What would you people get? The X800XT or an X1600? Remember, AGP.

This is what I currently have.

AMD 3200+ (Barton)
ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe
1GB Corsair Extreme DDR400 (2-3-3-5)
Maxtor DiamondMax 9 - 60GB - ATA 133 - 7200 RPM - 8Mb Cache
ZALMAN CNPS7000B-CU (Heatsink)
Leadtek WinFast A6600 GT TDH 128MB GDDR3 (Now I have a Geforce 5900 which is modded to a 5950U @ 500/500, but it overheats like mad)
Antec TRUE CONTROL 550 ATX 550W PSU

Yeah, not sure how the x1600p is in agp, but an X800XT should still beat an x1600p crossfire setup in pci-e. As for performance in most "current" games, it's still going great. It should run all games out now at 1280 resolution or 1024 with some aa/af.

Djin 1980,

I'm in the same boat and chose the AIW X800XT. ATI has a trade-up program where you get significant dollars off the price of the card and the trade-in card doesn't have to be of any significant value or current, in any way. The only problem is they're on back order, but I was told they should have them in stock, by the end of this month.

The only AGP card that really beats it is the X850XT PE and if you check out the comparisons, it's only by a very small margin, a few percent. Also, I understand the AIW X800XT is highly overclockable, plus you get all the multi-media benefits. The only down side I see is that it doesn't have the dual slot cooling of the X850 series ...

The 1600 and 1650 cannot compare and the trade-up deal makes it an ideal purchase, at this time.

Hope this helps,

John

I'm sure I have made oodles of posts aboot this before but new models are not introduced to benefit the end-user but rather the bottom line because they are cheaper to manufacturer. Therefore, previous generation high-end models often end up being better value, especially when considering pre-owned. Sure, the newer generation always has a few additional features but often they are of questionable value right away, as software development lags the hardware.

I would definitely recommend an X800XT, especially for gaming only. If video was a factor then the relative compromise in value inherent in the 7600 GT would be less due to AVC acceleration, at least.

I found an ATI AIW X800XT for $152 new. I'm going to order it. I've been looking at the difference between the 6600GT and this, and it's night and day.

Lets just hope it's everything I'm expecting it to be. Also this will be my first ATI card. 😉

Djin1980,

with the ATI trade-up program, I'm paying $119.00 cnd, which is ~ $107.00 us. These are brand spanking new cards with a full 3 year warrantee.

Heck yes. I've been running an X800XT for a few days now and it rocks. While the performance difference between this and my 9600xt was negligible in WoW, the performance difference in everything else was about quadrouple. Even the 3D view in ATI tool ran at 212fps versus the 47 the 9600 managed on the same rig. I have yet to settle for anything then the highest settings with this card. That would probably only change if I were to boot up Oblivion and the like.

That thing is even more fun to play than 3D Mark! 😉

OP,

You'll get excellent performance out of an x800xt in all but the newest games. It struggles a bit in BF2, and probably doesn't play Oblivion well, but I wouldn't know. It's quite good on the Doom3 engine, as well as HL2.

I've just upgraded, but the x800xt is quite a fine card, especially for the price (and the fact that it's available on AGP).

The X850Pro (since returned to the store) I picked up to upgrade my 9800Pro awhile back could play BF2 @1280x1024 with most of the settings on max, but w/o AA. It wasn't that much of a step up from my 9800, so I brought it back to CompUSA.

I've heard the X800XL is a better card, and that should last you - unless u want Oblivion at max settings or AA/AF in every single game.

And yes, from what I've read, stay away from the X1600 series...

x800xt is as much as 2x as fast most of the time. The difference in speed is something like 33% to 120% or so.

The 7600gt is fast but unfortunately it dosent exist yet in retail.

I got my AIW X800XT a couple weeks ago and I love it. My CPU limits me in games now thoogh. The only thing that is bad about it is the drivers. If you intend on using the TV tuner and recording stuff. I recommend keeping the original drivers. Yeah I know, a big no no in the tech forums. But I tried updating the drivers and it's complicated. You have to install them in a certain sequence for it all to work correctly. I still haven't gotten my remote to work again 🙁

Overall, I would buy it again in a heart beat! Still happy with my purchase 😀

Edit: Yeah, it kills the X1600Pro, I already owned it too 😉

Thanks everyone for the information. A lot of people were telling me that with the SM3 that the X1600 had, I would be losing a lot of "extras" with an older card.

SM 3.0 is why I bought my 7800gs co superclock....and ya know what? There aren't many games the really use it yet...and even in oblivion....the difference between running Bloom and HDR is so minimal it's silly. I've read where a lot of player actually even prefer running bloom. So you wouldn't miss anything. I paid $309 for my card , which is from all the homework that I've done ..."The fastest AGP card" period. But it is a fact...FACT. that the X800 X850 cards get you 90%-95% of the performance. For less than half that price. I love my card , but I wouldn't do it again.

Depends where and what is considered retail but it has been available in Nippon for a month and NA and UK for a couple weeks.

Okay, who's the joker that voted for the X1600? 😛
