I do occasional contract work for a guy who runs a small business from his home. Right now he has 3 computers, 2 newer, 1 old, the newer ones are used the most. They are currently connected through a router onto DSL.

He just contacted me and he would like to be able to share the files between all the computers in one place, basically eliminate the 3 different "My Computers" [XP machines] and have them all be in one place. He would also like to share a printer or two between all 3 computers. The new one he bought is a USB printer, but I think the other one uses a regular parallel cable, but I believe it also has the capability to be plugged into a network.

When I got the request I was thinking that I could do this by setting up a Linux box and using Samba, but I want to stay away from that because I want to keep it easy, I don't spend much time there and the less administration and setup needed, the better it is. So after doing some searches on Froogle I found some devices that do Print Server for about $450 (and iomega one) and also other devices that can do usb print server with wireless router, but not all in one... well this device comes close:

but it doesn't do wireless. The reason why I would like to do wireless is so that he can connect his personal computer to the business network which is in a different apartment about 40 feet away (and eliminate the DSL account from his home apartment).

Anyway, does anybody here know of a single device or simple solution? Thanks in advance.

I would buy this type of all in one only for humble users that uses the Internet and their computer for simple things and thus I can count on the same needs for the next few years.

Otherwise it is a waste of money. As an example the unit that you linked to offers 120GB drive, what happen if after few months more is needed?

The specs of the unit in your link do not indicate if the VPN is real end-point. I.e. the Router part can be acquired as a stand alone Router for $10, or a Wireless cable/DSL Router for $50.

The NAS Drive comes formatted; they did not bother to tell you which format (FAT32, NTFS, Linux???). Current inexpensive NAS does not let you change format.

A stand alone NAS from D-Link cost $70 and a USB enclosure with 250GB can be combined for $150.

So going your way you would pay $350, you would have 2 boxes (the combo, and an access point), and only 120GB storage.

Or for a little Less money you would have three boxes with 250GB storage, and more flexibility for changes in the future. (Three Boxes might comprise of a good Wireless Cable/DSL Router, D-Link NAS, and USB Enclosure drive).

Thanks for the NAS idea I will look into that. About 120GB not being enough in a few years, I seriously doubt that since they mostly do work with data that is in excel files or microsoft access, no real kinds of graphics except for maybe a report or publication here and there. But in any case it looks like it could be a better solution.
