All in 1 Printers- Canon vs HP

I'm looking to get a new printer, and I really want 1 of those all in 1 printer things (copier, fax, scanner and printer.)

My sister's got the HP 950, which has been discontinued and seems great to me. She used to have 2 different Canon models and had bad experiences with them- they failed to work in Windows 98 or in XP but the HP has worked well. The software seemed kind of flakey. But these were older models (like the multipass C3500 or older models) and the form facter I'd want would be a flat scanner, like the HP 950 is.

A friend of mine, however, recommends canon because ink is much cheaper.

I'd use it primarily for printing in black and white or for scanning images (pictures, articles, etc.); my HP 722c has worked well for me but recently I've needed to replace the ink in it, and since ink is as expensive as it is (and I want 1 of these machines anyway) I figure it's time to upgrade.

Suggestions anyone?

I'm not a big fun of All-In-One units. I'd rather use a separate laser printer and a flatbed scanner. With scanners price so low and laser printers at rock bottom price, you're probably better off with two units rather than an all in one unit. An All-In-One unit is nothing but a merge of a scanner and a printer with all the software put together. The advantage of having a separate scanner and printer is, if the scanner is broken, you still have the printer and vice versa. With the packaged software on the scanner you can do scanning & faxing. While the printer does the printing. Another advantage is the laser printer which lasts longer, cheaper toner and better quality. If you like color printing, then you can buy another color ink printer or maybe a laser color printer if you can afford it. To have two printers all you need is a parallel switch. But if you really like All In One units, then go for the HP. Standby to pay for an arm and a leg for the ink though.

I would half to say that those "Economical" all in one units are Crap. Most of the time they use older technology "Bundled" with useless features.

Get a canon i860 (unbelievable photo quality and speed) and a decent flatbed scanner.

Youll be much much happier.

and also,

The new HP printers are garbage. no where near the same quality as years ago.

On the other hand,

Canon now covers their print heads under mfg warranty( This was the only knock on them in the past)

i still use a hp 712C for basic b&w and the quality of this printer is no where to be found in current HP product line.
