All-in-1 Printer recomendations

Hello there my mother is thinking about getting 2 separate printers if there isn't an option that meets everything:

She would like one that prints good quality photos that are archive quality (long lasting?) and another that is an All-in-1 printer/scanner/fax unless you can recomend one that does both.

What is better inkjet or laser? Is one cheaper in ink than the other (in the long run) ? Any brand preferences?

I'm assuming that the laser is more expensive so does a price range of no more than 1000 CA$ (~850 US$) make sense? (I have no idea, this seems like a lot)

Thanks a lot.

For Photos, you need Inkjet .. look at HP7310 for a good All In One Unit
It can: Copy, Scan, Fax, do Photos with built in Media Card Reader,
it can Auto Duplex, can Scan Legal Size Paper, has an Auto Document
Feeder, Full Flat Bed Scanner

Downside: Black Ink and a Multicolor Cartridge for Colors
Some brands have seperate color inks for about 5-6 Inks .. easier to
refill / replace if only one or two colors run low
On HP and most others, there are special cartridges for use when you
want to do Photos

Bruceb is correct when he says for photos---its an inkjet---color lasers won't do near as well when photoprinting is a criteria.

But when it comes to photoprinters---go to any photoprinting forum---and Canon users will predominate---and for one reason---economy---meaning low consumable costs.
And if your Mom wants to go with refilling---photoprinting can become really affordable---and with a Canon--refilling is very easy.---and not so an HP.

Only reason I suggested an HP is because he was looking for an All In One if possible
and HP is one of the best, though not the least expensive. They hardly ever break.

Canon MP-830 has all that you mentioned but you have to buy canon ink and paper which is muy expensivo. Since I use good but inexpensive alternatives to Canon consumables, I say, "If it fades, print another!"

Two printer solution: Canon IP6700D and the Canon MP530

I don't understand the need for a photo to last 100 years in the digital age.

Imagine how good printers will be in 10 years. Most people will want to reprint their photos agian using the state of the art printers of the day. Plus in 100 years that photo you printed is going to age anyways. I have some 50 year old photos I'm working with and can only imagine what could be done with them if I had them in the digital format.

So store your digital photos well and in 10 to 20 years you will find yourself reprinting them with state of the art printers of the day.
