All HOWTOs say I need an access point for 802.11b. Can't I do it "crossover-style?" If so, plz show me how! :)

Why does everything say I NEED an access point for 802.11b? Can't I network my other PCs the old-skool way with wires and only use ONE 802.11b expansion card for my PC and ONE 802.11b PCMCIA card for my laptop and have the PC with the expansion card act as an access point between itself, the rest of the network, and the laptop? I don't want to buy some hybrid do-all hub, I'd rather stick to wires if that were the only other option. If two PCs with NICs can network with nothing but a crossover cable, then 802.11b can network two PCs without an access point, can't it? So far, I have not seen a single article mention adding it to your existing network without buying access points.

I don't need to roam great distances, because it will be primarily for file transfer and Internet connection between two adjacent rooms (Besides, it's in a trailer), so lost distance isn't an issue.

Anyone wanna write up a HOWTO for this kind of setup? :)

Thnx!

Two Wireless cards can converse adequately. Most cards' software let you choose between Infra Structure, and Ad-Hoc Mode.

Infrastructure = Card to Access Point.

Ad-Hoc = Card to Card.

However, to put a Wireless Client Card into the Desktop, you need either a PCMCIA card with PCI Adaptor ($40), or a USB client Card. Either of these cards has to be of good quality to maintain a reliable connection.

Therefore, with the current price of WAPs, you better off having the flexibility of an open system.

Sounds like what I needed to know! Thnx guys... BTW, a card is slightly cheaper than an access point and I think I'll find it MUCH more configurable for what I need :)
