All hail Maxtor DiamonMax 9!!

For the past 3 years, the Hard drive has always been the loudest component in my PC. I never thought I'd own a reasonably quiet computer ever. But I bought a 160gb Maxtor last week, and replaced my 60gb drive, and voila, my 28db cpu fan becomes the loudest component in my pc. HOLY MOLY. This new hard drive is DEAD silent. I have to look at the LEDs to know when its running and when its not. I went from a high pitched whine (that i've almost gotten accustomed to) a slight hum. Inspired by the drop in noise level, I went online and ordered a 20db Zalman fan for my cpu. =)

First I was thrilled that my mobo recognized all 160 gbs of the hdd. Then the radical drop in noise levels. I'm loving this new maxtor drive (did I mention its really fast too? Full fresh WinXP Pro installation in under 15 mins!! ) and I highly recommend it to anyone out there.

If you want to make your pc quiet, then I suggest you check out your hard drive before you drop $$$ on quiet case fans and passive heatsinks.

I think I've fallen in love with my pc all over again.

come back to us in 2-3 months and report how silent it is

most hd's expecialy silent ones go loud after a few months, (have a silent segate and what I thought at first silent wd se)

I have heard this lots about WDs... first time for Maxtor tho.

the diamonmax plus 9 is probably one of the best HDD's you can pick up for the cash, I've got a 60GB one and its doing fine. I'll definately buy another when my broadband connection is connected!

The Maxtor has fluid bearings, and I don't think the WD has them, that is the difference. The fuild will never get noisy.

Another vote for maxtor diamond max9. I got the same 160GB version as it came with my PC. Excellent speed, as well as little noise. My friend was saying it would be like a rock concert in my PC, with the things I was getting. But thankfully that is not the case.

It's a pretty good drive, but as for silence, I have to give that to my Maxtor VL40 (40gb 5400rpm, deliberately toned down seeks).

It's still my master, as I capture onto the 160 Ultra. I haven't heard a hard drive seek for about two years now...but yes, the seeks are audible on the 160 Ultra, though they're not uber loud.

I wonder if anyone has a Barracuda IV 40GB to relate to the DM9+ Ultra drives.

Another vote for Diamond Max 9 with 8mb cache. Nine months overclocked at 43 mhz PCI bus, and still quiter than my WD utility drive.

I just hope the Maxtor lasts longer than my 75gxp deathstars. After 6 months of use, both of them became dead silent too. Mostly because they were more "dead" than "silent".

i think not all maxtors have fluids. i had a DMAX 8 7200rpm and it got noisy within a month or so. also when it loads it has pretty noisy crunching sound which is annoying. bought a WD1200JB and it is definitely more quiet than the maxtor

then again it is differnet people's different opinions

btw the maxtor 8mb has a 1 year warranty and that is enough reason for me to stay away...

My Raptor actually got quieter after I installed it and turned the computer on... probably once it gets up to operating temp, tolerances are closer to what they're supposed to be so less noise is created by bearings and whatnot.

Exactly. I have Maxtor 160gb / 8mb and it was very quiet at first. Now it whines like a spoiled stepchild. But, it is very fast. I can do a full XP Pro install well under 12 minutes.

Well, atleast I enjoyed the ~15 hours of joy that the silent hard drive brought me. I hope you guys are wrong about it becoming whiney. Now that I've experienced the golden silence, there's no way I will go back to that bloody whine...

I read online that every intel chipset since the i810 has 48bit lba support (so it recognizes the large 160gb hard drives). But my motherboard has the SiS 735 chipset. Even though its newer than the Intel i810, I couldn't be sure if it had the large drive support. Only way to know for sure was the plug the hard drive in. I did, and the bios showed 163.3GB as the capacity. This made me extremely happyl, because I didnt want to spend more on an ata133 card, and since I didnt want an extra controller in my pc. But then I noticed how quiet the drive was, and my then happy state morphed into an ecstatic one. Haven't felt this good about this pc since when I first got and built it.

In conclusion, if you have a fairly new motherboard (less than a year and a half) then there's a good chance that it supports the large hard drives. But remember that you still need WinXP SP1 or Win2k SP3 or better for the OS to make partitions more than 137gb.

I refuse to touch a Maxtor hard drive. My school had to replace at least 10 Maxtor hard drives this year! I think I'll stick with SeaGate 😀
