I'm going to put together a box for work use.
All including shipping is less than $1100. US
I haven't had experience with Lite-On products but have read a couple good reviews.

Anyway, just wondering what others might think of my choices.

One more thing, is "newegg.com" a reputable outfit to order on-line from??

Well, I'd suggest you get the D850MVL with built in Ethernet rather than get the D-Link NIC: it'll save you a PCI slot, in case you ever need PCI slots later...

Re: the Lite-On stuff, I don't know, but their prices seem MAJORLY low... a Plextor 24X CD-RW is like 200USD, I think (I got a 16X for myself, it's Good Enough), but then again Plextor is supposed to be the best CD-RWs out there.

Re: your HD choice... there was one model line of IBM HDs that people had problems with, I don't remember which line it is though.

Re: your video card... good luck with ATI, personally I swear by nVidia (yes, I know, the proper capitalization is NVIDIA these days, but all caps is so yelling) cards because they have better drivers (23.11 on WinXP on my D850MVL box here works nice with my GF3 Ti500)

Make sure you get the BOXED P4 processor: that one includes a heat sink and whatnot.

Also, there are a few things you're not mentioning. For example, are you planning to use the built-in audio? Are you planning on getting new speakers/keyboard/mouse/monitor (monitors are, IMHO, very important...)?

One other thing: you might be able to get RDRAM cheaper... a month ago or so, it was USD80 for a 256 meg PC800 Samsung non-ECC RIMM at googlegear.com. Try ibuyer.net to find lowest prices, too.

That's about all I have to say... should make for a damned nice box, IMHO... (but no, I won't trade mine for yours ;-))

NewEgg is great. Also why not go with AMD? you could get it cheaper, plus better performance and no need for expensive rambus memory.

Meliorator,
newwegg is very good and fast, the lite-on CDRW is a good burner
But I would go with a MSI or EPOX mother board and an AMD 1800+ XP,this will drop the price some,BUT THE PERFPRMANCE IS BETTER
I just upgraided all my Intel's to AMD and I'm very HAPPY ;)

I would change to this:
AMD ATHLON XP 1800+/266 FSB PROCESSOR CPU - OEM 1800+/ 1.53GHz
$158.00

Thermal Integration's Dr. Thermal CPU Fan
$22.00

MSI K7T266 PRO2
$104.00

KINGSTON KVR266X64C25/256 256MB 32x64 PC2100 DDR RAM
$72.00ea (get 2)

MAXTOP CSX-147K-GF-USB-GRAY **Cool Case**
$49.00

all looks good. get the MVL and skip the cheap NIC. see if you can find a northwood 1.8. I think I saw some NW 1.6 and stuff out there. Don't go AMD if you want stability. VIA chipsetes are just plain bad (PCI does not even meet spec) and the latest AMD chipset does not have a fast memory controller. Also get a boxed CPU and skip the thermal take fan. you can't oc the intel board and the oem HSF works fine and is quiet.

I thought that 80x80x25 fan was actually a case fan, not a CPU fan? In that case, the original poster might as well get it...

I'm not sure if you've checked major DDR brands lately (i.e., the ones that actually work), but the price per MB is almost the same as rambus, especially if you go for the faster DDR. RIMMs overclock by 15% without a hiccup, and some here have been running them 26% overclocked.

I would def go AMD and either a kt266a board or an Nforce. get the panaflo l1a's from bgmicro for $3 each. Good choice on case, altho I would go for the sx1040b
