Technically if the board doesn't work you can....

However if it was becuase you neglected to replace an old surge protector (which most do not) or shutdown the system with an thunderstorm in the area some may say it was your own fault....

You go struggle with that question...You wont get much helkp here with this one, trust me!!!

Not ethically or legally.

Your mobo warranty is against defects in manufacturing not against lightning any more than for spilling grape juice with the case open.

You might have insurance through the power strip if it's a good one, or tenant's insurance if you pay for that but this is not the fault of the mobo maker so RMAing would be stealing. You might get away with it, but you'll still be going to Hell or be reincarnated as a caterpillar (depending on your beliefs).

i'm gonna open a real can o worms here!!

I am only guessing about the lightning. All I know is a day after the storm, I fired the computer up and i saw smoke, turned it off, took it apart and found the mobo burnt. I am really only guessing about the storm.

Guess the thing to do is contact the mfgr and tell them what happened and let them decide.

Thanks for the input.

Did I say that the case was open or closed?
I never close my cases, always been my habit.

What is your problem anyway?

If you dont have anything constructive, then ah heck off out of here and go cause trouble someplace else!!!!!!!!!!!

Most likely not, like DaveSimmons said your mobo's warranty only applies if it is their fault.

It most likely is the storm or so it sounds like, my question... did you have a surge protector installed... what they only cost $15 for a 6 plug one.

Puts on Flame suit...lol

I am just saying I have never seen a mobo smoke up to the point someone can see smoke coming from the "motherboard"!

Should be covered by your homeowners or apartment insurance.

RMA'ing it certainly would not be ethical, at a minimum, in my view.

The only time I've seen smoke coming from a computer was that one time when I threw a doobie.....ah nevermind. :)

No seriously, Dr. Tom's video of an Athlon "dying a thermal death" clearly shows smoke coming from the motherboard. Maybe your fan died on you?

the case fan and the cpu fan were fine. One of the "trace Lines", I think they are called that, maybe, anyway one of the real thin lines is where the smoking came from. When I took the mobo out, you can clearly see the line sticking up like a piece of thread, burnt thread that is, and it is all black around that who area.

I'm just gonna toss it, only cost me $20 anyway.
