I can understand why some people would want to do this but honestly it looks pretty bad. Especially when the other houses have a lawn or some type of landscaping. Also unless you don't care about weeds it's actually more work than having grass because the grass keeps most of the weeds under control.

Wut? Who just has bare earth on purpose?

Nobody except real idiots. People in areas where it's a pain in the butt to grow grass, like Arizona and New Mexico often go for the rock garden look. Easy to maintain, requires little water and keeps weeds under control.

See that looks really nice and totally makes sense in the climate. Bare earth just shouts "Cant be arsed!".

I have never seen such a thing. Is this common where you live?

There's like 3 houses in my neighborhood that did it. I think it started when we were in a very bad spell of drought and everyone was asked to help conserve water. They got rid of the lawn but never bothered to do anything else. No plants or any type of landscaping. Just bare dirt.

Yeah. That would turn into a massive cat litter tray really quickly around here!

Yeah, I've thought about doing my front yard in something maintenance-free while keeping grass in the back. It would be so much easier in the long run, but it's a pain in the ass up front and it's a bitch to switch back. There's no way to just abandon it completely, even if I kill everything off with Round-Up that becomes an ongoing necessity or it would turn into a weed-infested nightmare. You just can't keep bare dirt bare.

It's called "redneck" landscaping. The next step is "poor white trash" landscaping. It's the same as redneck but you add an old Chevy on blocks. If you use a BMW instead of a Chevy it becomes "shabby chic".

Bare yards are becoming more common as folks want more space to park their humongous giant trucks and other toys.

Plant soybeans or corn :^P

We have some areas around here that are nothing but rock. I'd love to have a few acres like that, Clear just enough trees to wedge a small house in, and leave the rest. Just rocks, ferns, and trees. Maybe a tiny spot in the back for a garden.

I'm trying to think of ways to get rid of my grass that doesn't cost a fortune, but I keep coming up blank. I'd like to build stone works, and I can get stones, but I'd have to haul and place them. I laid natural stones down in the back as a crude patio, and it's shocking how far a big ass pile of rocks go(not very).

You know you're lazy when you go artificial grass but don't want to remove the few weeds growing along the edges. lol

Our yard was gravel when we bought it. We've had at least fifteen yards of rock delivered to our yard over the years and hauled tons and tons and tons ourselves. A seventy five foot long, one foot high retaining wall required about ten pickup loads of rock. The yard still doesn't look particularly rocky. Having boulders delivered is kind of fun. The landscaping service places the boulders with a crane so you really can do the "a little to the right, a little to the left" with them.

When I was in the Army I was stationed at Ft Bliss Texas. We had a 6' -8' area of grass in front of our barracks which which had grass growing, but there were vast areas behind the barracks where the sand was covered with rock. It was not cost effective to grow grass everywhere.
El Paso is basically a desert with sand for soil. Unless you grow cactus or sage brush nothing much will grow there.
