All cable modems the same?

I was wondering if there are different kinds of cable modems or will any brand work? I'm looking into getting cable internet but am not sure if I need a specific brand or something for my cable company. I am using Knology Cable if anyone else uses it and might know which cable modem to get. Thanks.
 
There are two kinds of cable modems, DOCSIS and non-DOCSIS. Kinda like flex and v.90 56K modems, just different standards.

You need to find out which kind your cable provider uses. It should be as simple as that, the brand doesn't really matter. Try checking their website, they may have a list of compatible modems. If not, give them a call and check before you buy one.
