I have a couple questions about cdrs. First, I'm hearing that Dye 9 is supposed to be the best, but what is the real difference between the dyes? I've heard posts about Dye 0, 8, and 9, but thats about it. Also, what does the buffer underrun error mean?

Thanks!

Dye 9 is called Phthalocyanine type 9. Yes, it is supposed to be the best because of its longevity and reflectiveness. Type 8 is also a form of phthalocyanine. Type 0 and 1 are cyanine. 0 is usually blue, while 1 is green/greenish-blue. Blue is a little better than green. Gold and silver are the best, even though they're really not gold and silver (they look like it). Type 8 and 9 are rather shiny and have sort of greenish/silvery tint to them. They are good, and are now more readily/easily available, even in generic brand discs.

Buffer underruns occur when the buffer of the burner runs out and the data stream is broken. Since most burns require a constant sream of data, an underrun will result in an error and the disc will be wasted (sometimes they still work, in the case of audio cds). Burners with the BURN Proof technology avoid this problem by stopping the laser in the case of the buffer running out. When the stream is "unbroken" the laser starts again and the burning continues. The Plextor 12/10/32 and the TDK Cyclone 12/10/32 support BURN Proof.

Hope that answers your questions. :)
