I remember hearing that Apple and AT&T will cut $200 off the price of the iPhone 3G when it arrives this summer.

The phones should hit at $399 and $499 for 8 and 16-gigabyte versions and the subsidy should drop the price to as low as $199.

That's all fine and dandy for those who don't mind getting involved in a 2 year contract. But for the rest who don't want to sign a two year contract with ATT and are happy with their current provider, it's a deal.

I missed out on it last time and was waiting for the deal to come back. Got one for my SO. She is turning out a gadget freak. :)

That's what I meant.

But as far as the 3G iPhone is concerned no one knows anything about it, whether it will be unlockable or whatnot. Not to mention that it will only work with ATT's 3G network as Tmobile's uses a different frequency.

Release date hasn't been stated, the new version hasn't even been unveiled. I reckon that they'll stop selling the 1st gen iPhones once the new ones are released, but until the new ones can be unlocked people will still be buying up the old ones.

They just sold out, while I was purchasing it. I got a random error after entering billing info, contacted customer support and they said they sold out. :(

Just got mine today. It came with no SIM card. There is a plastic card in the box, but it has a gaping hole where the SIM card was supposed to be.

Was it supposed to come with a SIM card? I understand I don't really need it to use it on T-Mobile (I will be using my SIM card from the current phone), but I am curious.

That's strange; all the refurb phones I've bought through AT&T's premier site came with SIM cards.

I called AT&T a bit earlier. They said that the iPhones ship with SIM cards already preinstalled. I did a quick Google search and easily found a site that showed how to access the SIM card slot. I will open it tonight when I get home and post my observations.

Ordered mine last Friday and got it yesterday. SIM card came preinstalled, so I took it out, popped in my Tmobile SIM, ran ZiPhone and rebooted. Works great!

Do these have to be ordered with the 2 year contract? I have an old AT&T Blue plan and I don't want to upgrade. Nor do I want to risk a fake from ebay.

Contract is made during the activation process on iTunes. So no, you don't have to sign any contract.

I didn't see the buy button when they were active, just a button advising of the 2 year contract. O-well, OOS now anyway. I guewss i'll have to keep an eye out and see if any more come in.

nope, it's as simple as plugging it in, cancelling out of itunes if it opens up, then running ziphone, rebooting the phone and there ya go. all done.

I suggest iLiberty+ or the Pwnage tool over ZiPhone, but to each their own.

It depends though what bootloader your phone comes with. Since refurbs aren't brand new some might come with the older bootloader, in which case ZiPhone is fine. But for those that have the 4.6BL, you don't really want ZiPhone downgrading the bootloader to 3.6 as it can't be undone and has been known to cause some problems. Also as far as warranty is concerned, you take it back and Apple finds a 3.6BL on a phone that should have 4.6, then well, no warranty for you.
