A friend of mine is trying desperately to get rid of an old Alienware PC he doesn't want, and I'm thinking of taking it off his hands and cannibalising it for parts. He's got an AM2+ motherboard, like mine, but far better so I may drop my CPU into his motherboard.

Does anyone know if the "Alienware P2" case is any good? It looks like this:

(Except his is black with purple lighting.)

It's a standard ATX layout inside, no funny Dell business.

The case is pretty massive and gaudy looking, but I could be tempted if it performs well. I could just lift the motherboard out of his case and install it in my current one, but the one I have is a pretty terrible AKASA number- http://www.akasa.co.uk/update.php?t...1&type=Chassis&type_sub=Mid ATX&model=AK-5004

It actually looks pretty decent.

It looks to have a 120mm in the front and a 92mm in the back (maybe)?

You can always take off the plastic parts, spray paint it place, and put it back into place.

Never mind- I took a look at the case last night, and it's freaking huge. It looks like Dell took a tower server case, then added an extra couple of inches of plastic in each dimension to make the thing even bigger. There's no way I could fit something that size under my desk!

Nah, judging from pictures of the R4 this thing is a lot bigger in every direction. It's big enough to fit an E-ATX motherboard in, with room to spare. This picture gives a better idea of the motherboard tray:

And then there's several inches of unnecessary plastic tat in the front, and the same flimsy door mechanism that I've seen on old Dell Precision workstations. (Thankfully been ditched on the newer models.) It's just pointlessly big.

Yeah, they took a well constructed steel server case and covered it in inches of tacky, flimsy plastic bling. Way to ruin a case Alienware
