Alienware m11x (su7300) slow to wake up from sleep mode

Is this normal?

It takes almost as long as powering it on from off mode.

BUT, if i wake it up from going to sleep a few seconds ago, it would be pretty quick. But if it went to sleep like the night before, it takes a while to come on.

Have you checked to see if your machine is going into "hybernate" mode? It's a deeper power down state that would take longer to wake up than simple sleep mode. Here's an explanation of the differences.

Yeah, I have actually checked the power options to see what i have set for when i close the lid and/or press the power button and it's all set to sleep.

But you have compelled me to triple check. I reset and resaved the settings for it again to see if it behaves the same way.

It sounds like it goes into hibernate after x number of hours in sleep mode. My desktop takes a while to return from "sleep" if there is a power-outage, which obviously kills sleep mode and forces it to resume from a hibernation state instead.

aha! i think you got it. i just went into the advanced power settings to double check and yes, it was set to hibernate if inactive for 360 minutes. thank you all!

so! i was able to further test this out but of course, that would've been too easy. that setting was not the problem.

I was advised to go into control panel in the performance info and tools section. it actually tells you what's slowing down the resume from sleep function. turns out some drivers (mainly the nvidia) are the culprits.

My experience is that sometimes it is fast, sometimes it is slow. Because of the vriable timing, I can't tell when it is safe to close my lid to avoid the dreaded hard-lock that I often get when I close my lid as it enters sleep mode. I either have to close it immediately or wait for it to finish completely and the keyboard backlighting goes out before closing it. I have my lid sensor set to "do nothing" so that I can close it and move around without interrupting downloads or live streams. It would be fine if it was still set to trigger sleep by closing it, but I've never understood how people tolerate that default setting. For some strange reason there are actually TWO sensors and at least one is a magnetic relay switch.
