Alienware laptops compared to Macbook pros.

So the cheapest Alienware laptop I find is going for $1,099.

That is also the cheapest macbook pro price also.

I heard that Macbook and Alienware are both notorious for rip offs and their exorbitant prices for their specs.

Which is less of a rip off?

BTW when you work out where to pose the question you might want to give some usage scenarios otherwise all you are going to get is fanboys bashing the other team.

Those are the BMW & Mercedes of the computer world. It depends on what you are planning on using it for. If you want to game, go with an Alienware. If you want less hassle in your operating system as far as Internet security vulnerabilities goes, go with a Mac.

Or save the money and buy a Chromebook :awe:

- post in SFF, laptops forum
- describe what you want to use it for
- consider other brands too

I want to use my laptop for both slight gaming and media/movies and etc.

I want portability also.
 
Do Alienwares still have crap battery life? Personally, I wouldn't spend that much for a Dell. Not when you can get a basic laptop for half that price.

Yes, Macs are overpriced. However, they are some of the best built laptops I've come across. No cheap plastic. Battery life is also top notch. I've had my MacBook Unibody since 2008 and it's still going strong. Just need to put an SSD in there. They pay for themselves overtime if you like the OS X ecosystem.
 
Lenovo, HP, Asus, Sager, Clevo (various rebrands) have cheaper models with discrete graphics cards.

Anything above the cheapest AMD CPUs and the old Atom netbooks are fine for media/movies.

So: how much gaming? What games, what resolution? What is your budget?

What screen size? Is 15.6" at 720p OK?

Is 5-6 lbs OK, or are you willing to spend much more for something lighter?

Has gaming changed for MACs? My understanding is it is a gaming desert.
 
If you want a NBD warranty, the highest benchmark numbers, GPU hardware muxes, overclocking and overvolting potential, upgrade options, and decent chassis, AW is your only option. If you do not care about those things, a Sager, MSI, or ASUS "gaming laptop" is fine, and those brands have different advantages.

I know little about Apple's notebooks, but I assume that its reputation of "good quality" is deserved. Cooling is not great.

Dell Latitudes and Precisions are highly regarded and can cost as much as higher end Macbooks and more. The Precisions tend to be packed with better hardware than Macbooks and offer much better user upgradeability. Alienware is in a different segment so it should not be compared directly to Apple laptops or Dell's other laptops.

As far as what is less of a ripoff, I would say there is no ripoff. For some, spending $1000 on a laptop is a ripoff while for someone else, it is some other price. It varies. There is no right or wrong answer. Only you know what is a ripoff or not. Alienware is good and so is Apple. Just pick what you want out of a laptop and don't worry about the rest.
