I've been lookin for a gaming computer the past month, and this Alienware kinda got my attention. Is this a pretty good deal? I did some fuzzy math, and it's a bit more expensive that doing it yourself. But I don't really want to build it myself, because I like warranties, and I suck at that kind of stuff. My plan is to upgrade as i find hot deals, like getting another HD, or some more DDR, or a burner, and some case mods. What do you guys think?

In addition, there's free shipping and a 100 dollar off rebate/discount thing that pops up. I'm not quite sure if it applies to this system, however.

If you aren't into building then it isn't that bad of a price. You might check about the warranty coverage if you swap out parts on it. My only thought is if you tried a Dell Dimension system and just swapped out the video card. I suppose you could do the same for this one too though...

dunno how much of a deal it is but it is certainly a good system. board is a little old, but other than that it looks pretty top-notch stuff.

If you want it for the warranty, I would check resellerratings.com ... Alienware has a good reputation, but their rating on resellerratings.com isn't too good. I actually posted a comment up there, but it never got posted for some reason .. I had nothing but a bad experience with their customer service, and from the comments on resellerratings.com it seems like I'm not the only one. Just thought I'd let you know incase the warranty is the deciding factor.

yeah, it's not a bad deal.
at best buy, there is a sony we sell for the same price - it is a bit slower, sdr not ddr, and onboard/weak sound and video. i don't think the hps or compaqs come close in quality to either one. and gateway is definitely going to be more expensive.
the only thing extra is a larger (but slower) hd and a cd-rw
however, you can buy a 16x cd-rw for less than $70 now.
so i think this is a pretty good deal.
the only competition would be from Dell right now.

If you care at all about a warranty don't go with Alienware. they are in it for the money vs. their customers and if they have a chance to screw you they will.

That's my experience with them.

-Good luck having them pay for anything in the warranty period.

---Get your self a dell, they are good machines for a newb and you can upgrade pretty much so anything you want in them now days.

hmm this looks interesting too...

How reliable is alienware? As reliable as a dell?

I purchased a dell 2 years ago and nothing has failed yet, $2000 though

I'm not a n00b, I just like warranties. If i fry a GF3 in a computer i built myself, guess who pays for it? I have been considering Refurb Dell Optiplexes...i figure I can just drop in a GF2 or 3 instead, and make it pretty 1337. One problem might be that I can't mod the case, or drop everything in a new modded case (like a SX1030, or a Addtronics 6896. And, another thing is that Dell does only intel, but i can live with that.

Igobyte: How is it overpriced? I'm gonna round everything DOWN and show you component prices (From pricewatch), not including shipping.
Athlon XP1600 - 100
DDR ram - 48
Mobo - 100
HD - 70
KB and mouse - 50
SB Live - 40
GF3 Ti200 - 150
DVD drive - 50
Intel NIC - 50
XP Home edition - 100 (unless i warez it)
Antec SX1030 with a 340w PS - 120
That's 878 bucks, not including shipping or taxes, or time/hassle it takes for me to un-screw it up when i do everything. If i get this, I can get it for 954 bucks, including tax. I'm willing to pay that. However, if the warranty is bad, like some ppl are saying, I might get screwed. hmm....

Trey: when you go to the main page, there is a pop-up for a 100 dollar rebate for xmas day, or something. it also has free shipping.
Linxnerd: I got a monitor laying around...i'll just use that until I can plop down 200 on a nice 19.

Only hitch I see is the 5-6 WEEKS for delivery time... by the time you get it, prices will have dropped again and they'll be making a pretty penny off of you. If you buy a retail card from Best Buy/CompUSA/etc. and you fry it within 14-30 days (depends on the store), you can return it for a new one.... Spend the time and save the $$ IMHO

I think another hitch might be that the rebate would not work with this system, for I don't see it listed amongst the ones eligible for the rebate and free shipping offer. I guess you could always order and give them a call and cancel if it does not pan out, but best do it soon for the offer is good only for today: Expires Dec. 26th 12 a.m. EST

Andy is right for 899 this would be a very good deal. there are little extras included that add up to another hundred or so from the prices posted above and you don't void your g3 warranty by modding it. for a noob this would be a great choice at 899.

You can custimize and take off the Kookmax video cooling (-47) system. Total is $853 if you can get the $100 rebate to work.

I agree with PsychoAndy: The only way to build it cheaper with these components is if you steal the OS.

You could probably get a similar performance for a similar price if you cut corners on the case and video and work the deals really hard.

One advantage of building it yourself though: You can do it on the installment system and get it in under the radar of significant others. $1000 sitting on the C.Card sure looks ugly, but a CPU here and a case there over a few months goes down a lil better.

Next month I'll buy the CPU!!!!

EDIT: One thing disturbing about Alienware though. They try to create a image of a hardcore gaming rig, but it's imposible to find out the brand of PSU or who makes the MB. Things that make you go hmmmmm.
