The below quote is from the same article.

its so uninformed, its like they're saying video games are only for kids, so if its violent & a video game its geared towards kids. If u look at the demographics i bet half the people playing video games are 18+

Question is, do digital distribution companies such as steam/impulse/direct2drive/ect ect honor these countries restrictions by not allowing someone from X country with X game banned from buying it from them?

yes. if your IP address if from those countries, u simply can't purchase it, even if u try to use a proxy.

Read the rest on ShackNews

I commend Rebellion for taking that stance. The game also won't be appearing in Germany it seems.

I guess I would agree that adults can purchase whatever entertainment they want outside of certain things such a child porn, etc, but is all the violence in today's games really necessary. I play M rated games such as Mass Effect, Modern Warfare, etc, but I would rather have a good storyline than nonstop explicit, gory, bloody violence. For instance Kotor 1 was probably my all time favorite RPG, and was only rated T, but the story and production values were superb.

You make it sound like the choice is 'good story' or violence.

The violence in mass effect wasn't even that extreme, and I'm pretty sure they used the unreal 3 engine almost as is, just adding some new models. The gibbing was just stock ut gibbing.

That is my point. Mass Effect had a great story, good graphics, and the violence was not extreme at all. I did not say you could not have a good story and violence also. I am just saying that I think some games are just mainly about how much blood and gore you can show without putting that much effort into the story and gameplay.

Obviously the Australian old men that run the place still think games are for kids? They must share the same attitude as my father who refuses to accept that anyone over the age of 10 would want to play video games.

sigh...aren't most gamers in their 20s and 30s?

Stupid old men.

Strange logic there. Gaming is popular in Aus it is just that the government has pretty conservative (read daft) censorship policies. A lot of games have been banned initially but then released as MA15+ after an appeal or after minor editing.

That's pretty sad IMHO.

Godlessatronomer - you might make some Australians happy if you could send come copies their way. (your in NZ, right?) :p

Hah, cross-Tasman smuggling. Nice idea but I am currently living in China.

A few games are still banned in NZ but Australia seems to get it worse. I can't see why they don't just make an R game rating if they need to. Nothing in AVP would be more disturbing than the movie Hostel.
