I just stayed up with American McGee's ALICE most of the night.

Totally awesome graphics!!! They are making the very best usage I have ever seen of the Quake II machine.

However, as imaginative as the story, the fabulous scenes, etc., are - the gameplay just isn't really there. Hack, slash, toss a weapon, solve a problem and on to the next scene.

Anyone else notice this? Does it get better (I am by the waterfall)?

Plus (mini-rant), after just a few minutes of gameplay, you get yet another cut to a movie (and another and another and another) and a LONG time loading between levels.

I'd cautiously (with the above in mind) recommend this game.

I am sort of in love with the game at this point and I've been playing Alice since 12.30.2000. I couldn't accept playing anything but the hardest difficulty which now seems to be quite an inane/insane choice since surviving seems a bit too tough for me.

Yes, it still is hack'n'slash mostly, but it does get somewhat more interesting once you're through those trap filled 'Tomb Raider' levels and in the chessboard world.. beyond this I have no idea since I've yet to see what the future brings.

Thanks - I guess I have more to look forward to.

Does it take a really long time to load the levels? (the longest of any game I currently have - or is my HD slowing down?).

Alice is based on the Quake III engine.

I've only played the demo, but I have the same concerns as you : fabulous graphics, a really cool atmosphere, but no game play :( That's what keeping me from buying the full version...

Yes, it does take some time to load the levels unless you're loading the same level again and again due to getting killed all the time ;(

Typo. Thanks.

It's an amazing game - graphics and storyline. For $30 it is a good buy.

It isn't bad gameplay - just not innovative. Control is above average.

EDIT: Level load time is just a bit irritating (I'm known to now take a quick bathroom break). REloading a level is (normal) quick.

Wow, where did you see it for $30? I've only seen it for sale - once - at Compusa for under $30, but the sale's over and I see Alice for $37 usually.

the Mrs loves this game.

It is the best romp she had since Herectic2 and KQ:MOE.

Besides, the graphics kicks a**.

Sometimes I feel people and critics get too critical on gameplay and stuff. Going in, we know its a shooter in the 3rd person perspective. There is not going to be a great difference in gameplay. As long as its fun as heck, its good with me. IMHO. eg. The critics dissed Rune but I'm having a blast with it.

My .02 cents.

Well, I completed the game (on Sunday).

I have to say I am disappointed. I have never played theough a game so fast (parts of 4 days). It was a bit too easy at the "normal" level. Compared with Half-Life - which took me weeks to finish - I'd say I didn't get my full money's worth.

It just doesn't seem like I'd care to play it again on a harder level.

I've been playing ALICE for about 3 weeks now (on and off cause of that whole work thing) and I think that the graphics and storyline are great, though the controls and gameplay have left much to be desired. Right now I'm at the second meeting of the Jabawokyi(Sp??), which is near the end, and I have loved the game. The loading of new areas and cut-scenes is a bit long, but the game is fun none the less.
