When these two bands came out, it ushered in makeup, crazy on stage antics and spawned many other bands like Marilyn Manson etc.

Who do you think was most influential?

I'm quite possibly the world's biggest KISS fan, but if you want to look for influences to the makeup and onstage antics phenomenon you have yo go back a bit further to the band that inspired KISS and Alice Cooper.

That band being The New York Dolls

Now...if you want to look at just KISS and Alice Cooper then KISS wins hands down. If you need proof just look at how many musicians during the 80's, 90's and up until today say they were influenced by KISS or at least a member of KISS. There are a ton of guys out there playing guitar because of Ace Frehley.

You're right on Frehley. Technically speaking though, was Frehley a good guitarist? Or was it Kiss' fame that put him out there?

He was, and is, a very good guitarist.

When he's sober.

I voted KISS, but really, neither. I'd rather have voted for both Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin than either of these.

I agree with you about the KISS / Alice Cooper comments, but if anything, the New York Dolls were inspired by Cooper. Cooper had already released Killer by the time the Dolls formed their band in 1971, and didn't release their first album until Cooper had already released School's Out and Billion Dollar Babies (I saw both of these tours, Cooper was amongst the first concerts I ever went to).

I guess Cooper was recording before the Dolls, 69 vs.s 71, but from what I've read/seen in interviews it wasn't until the Dolls that stage shows and theatrics became part of the show.

It's possible. Cooper was already doing a lot in that regard but he didn't really put his whole act together, at least the way we think of it today, until Welcome to My Nightmare. It could be they influenced each other. :)

Hey, I'm from Detroit so I'm hardwired to be a KISS fan, but Copper's first three albums with Billion Dollar Babies were genius.

Why are you hardwired for Kiss, Detroit Rock City?

You should be hard wired for Alice, he's from Detroit!

KISS has often said that Detroit is its favorite place to play. Even in years that they didn't "tour" they played in Detroit. Detroit loves KISS and KISS loves Detroit.

I'd have to say most of KISS's music is just power chords and repetitious, but they would have to go at the top of my list of guilty pleasures.

I guess I don't know which would be considered most influential, but I've seen both, both shows were awesome, but I'd have to pick Alice Cooper as my favorite of the two.

I've seen both bands several times, KISS twice during the tours for Alive II again a few years ago. (the 1970's shows were very good but the recent show sucked)

Alice Cooper I've see at least a dozen times in locations ranging from MSG to nightclub/theatres like NYC's Savoy & I can say with confidence that Alice was much better based on that experience. (First time was on the Nightmare tour & last time was in Stamford CT a couple years ago)

As for influence, I think it depends on what you mean ... KISS may have influenced more kids to take up the guitar, but back in the 1970's they were considered a joke musically while Alice Cooper played with many of the best rock & roll musicians of the day.

Also while KISS is no doubt more popular today, Alice had several of the top-selling hard rock albums of the 1970's. (Billion dollar babies, Muscle of Love, Schools out, From the Inside)
