Alice and Bill's web site

slashdot has a story that caught my eye

history lesson for the kiddies:
back in the day (before the intraweb), computer geeks would buy computer parts through something called "mail order". computer parts businesses would advertise in a "paper" catalog/magazine called the "Computer Shopper" , it was in its heyday about 1-2 inch thick monthly publication that was 80% ads and included a few tech articles about tech stuff

one of the normal columns/features was an offbeat column by Alice and Bill from the "Lab of Doom and Pepsi Cola" . it was something i liked to read , besides the ads

i guess they will continue their musings on the web site

Wow, that was the first thing I turned to when I got my new Computer Shopper. 6 months of reading CS and I was ready to make my first computer purchase... and got a heckuva bargain because of that magazine.

Those were the days. When I got back into computers around '95 I would pore over those pages looking at all of the stuff I couldn't afford. :D

Bought my first rig mail-order from an ad in CS. It was from a company called Ares in MN. Awesome machine for its day.

Yep.. they had pages, listed by state, in the back of the catalog.

Back in the day (~7 years ago) I used to read Computer Shopper and wonder how the F TigerDirect could sell parts so cheap. Damn I was a noob.
