Alexandria, VA Hangouts

I'm pretty new to the area, and I'm looking for some cool places to hang out. I have a lady friend coming up tonight and we'd like to go out and grab a few beers. Any locals have suggestions for some cool places to hang out. I don't like super busy places, but like some life in the place.

Hrm. Any place in Old Town is going to be pretty busy, to be honest. It's a popular area, and gets busy.

If you're looking to take her to a nice dinner, I'd recommend the French place on King Street (Lafayette, not the other one)--if you're going really nice. If you want more hip/casual/still nice, go over to Crystal City and hit up the tapas place (the name escapes me, but you can't miss it). Crystal City has a lot of bars/sports bars/restaurants, and while relatively busy on a Friday night, it's never as busy as Old Town Alexandria or downtown DC.

The place sucks ass. I hated Alexandria. Other than that one mall off of (395 I think? Or 295 or something) and the fact that it's close to DC, I hated the place on my one business trip out there.

Yeah I will back up the Old Town will be heinously busy on a friday night, or any weekend night for that matter. Great place to go though if you don't mind the crowds.

The Fish Market is a pretty good little seafood place, down next to the waterfront. If you are looking for a place to eat/drink/do something then Hard Times, they have pool tables and a bar and pretty damn good food too. All these places I have mentioned are on King St, which is where all the action is in old town.

Well then we are just peachy not having you here.

Seconded on the Fish Market. And there's a Ben and Jerry's just down the street from it for after dinner. 🙂

Passing judgment on Alexandria after not going any further than the area around Landmark Center mall is like judging New York City after visiting Roosevelt Center Mall.

hahaha...no kidding. There's a lot more to Alexandria than Landmark Mall.

If you just want to go get drinks, I recommend Chadwicks (real laid back, chill type place), Union St Grille, Murphy's Irish Pub is always a lot of fun (will be packed though). If you want to go to a really nice restaurant, the Chart House is right on the waterfront in Old Town

Edit: everywhere I mentioned is in Old Town

Murphy's in old town is a fun bar if that's your scene. lots of restaurants, but some are quite pricey

we're supposed to get snow all day tomorrow so chances are not a lot of people will be out (they will all be at the grocery store stocking up because god forbid you dont have 2 weeks supply of milk or something...)

depends if you want a good time or want a crowd. crystal city is nice but you're not gonna see many people there. although bailey's is a fun bar / restaurant. and there's some good mexican restaurants there.

I would highly suggest Arlington if you're looking for a hip young crowd and lots to do. Check out courthouse / clarendon section especially. Just take 395 and get off at washington blvd.

Roosevelt Mall isn't even in New York City

Thanks for your 2 cents, but the point of the thread wasn't really to vent about your bad experience in Alexandria.

Dave and Busters is always fun, but it is busy and on the other side of the beltway in Rockville, might be one in woodbidge, i cant remember.

IIRC, thats the one with the white catwalk to the mall netrance, right? Right near the Big Screen store.

what the hell was I talking about then? ..I thought it was a D&B😱

I checked out the websites for Bailey's and Murphy's and they both look like pretty cool places. I'm pretty excited about going out later tonight.

Del Merei Grill in Arlington. Relatively expensive restaurant but excellent food. You can go in jeans or a suit. They have a bar there too.

i'm sorry... but screw going to old town... only good place is murphy's but even then it caters to an older crowd...

if your young go to claredon... check out the ballroom, claredon grill, mister days, bailey's or rock bottom... its a younger crowd in that area and we always end up having a great time... then you top off the evening at the silver diner... oh boy, now i am getting excited about tomorrow night...

meh, marios owns silver diner for late night grub.

I would hit up DC if I were you, but some good bars in VA you could go to is Cafe Asia right in Rosyln, Mr. Daves (or Days, i forget) that is not too far from there, or the Claringdon Ballroom.
