The sad thing is, this isn't as upsetting as it would have been if it happened before tuesday. God, I'm so numb.

I was just thinking of that commercial they play here all the time when the other race car driver locks him in the porta-john:)

Terrible loss, it'll get drowned out by the Terrorist thing and no one will remember or pay attention probably:(

little al ain't got nothin' on his dad either. he should retire. hes washed up, and been that way for a while. "i want to run the indy 500." uh huh. we know you couldn't compete in cart al. hell, you can hardly compete in IRL. the league that had its premier race dominated by 6 cart drivers, who finished 1 through 6.

mario rode by me on a scooter in the paddock of the grand prix of houston a few times. i coulda tipped him over if i wanted hehehe.

What a sad day for racing. I know there won't be any podium celebration at Monza, and who would've thought they'd ever see a plain red Ferrari with no livery and a black nose cone? Now Tag and Zanardi are both injured with Zanardi losing both legs:(

Although I don't know the details of the accident, I have to say that CART should seriously consider strengthening their safety standards to the levels that F1 cars are held to. Luciano Burti's 180mph head-on shunt with the wall is a testament to the positive results such high standards can reap.

No!!! I still remember the crazy pass he did on Bryan Herta in the corkscrew at Laguna Seca! He was a great driver to watch! Two drivers that really got me into auto racing are now out :( (Moore is the other one).

Nothing better happen to Patty!

Zanardi was a lot of fun to watch, especially during his championship years when he was charging to the front seemingly every week. He one of the main reasons I watched CART at the time.

I haven't seen the new track yet, is there anything about it that would lend itself to spinning on exiting from the pits? They said Zanardi was in the lead, so I'm sure he was pushing really hard coming out of the pits to maintain the lead. But it's not like him to lose it on cold tires, he's pretty well known for his car control. I feel terrible for him :(

I had set my AIW Radeon to capture the F1 qualifying session but I caught the end of the German CART race when they were talking about the tragedy. Truthfully, it sounds like mechanical failure to me. Perhaps the steering column broke but I can't understand Zanardi flying out of the pits the way they described it.

Damn, this is bad news. I was watching the race, but when the accident happened it was during a commercial break. They never did show a replay, but when they showed the car the first thing to pop in my mind was severe leg injury. I never even considered that it would be permanent though. :(

I'm so very saddened by this as well. :( :( :(

Alex is a wonderful guy, so open to the fans especially. His quick wit and sly smile will be greatly missed in the CART paddock.

GL: CART's safety standards, car-wise, are pretty well equal to F1's. A few differences but nothing that would have prevented this. If an F1 car at 200+ MPH hit another F1 car (traveling at substantially slower speed) broadside/T-boned it, that F1 car would be instantly cut in half also. No matter the series, a driver's legs are always at peril in the nose of that car. Did you see Roberto Moreno's crash head-on in to the inside wall at Cleveland this year? He walked away unscathed.

As for why Alex spun, I hadn't heard of any mech. failures. AFAIK, he was just trying to keep the lead after pitting. He was only 0.2 sec. behind the leader before both pitted on successive laps, and his pit stop was only 5.5 sec, beating the leader's by 1.5 sec., so I think he was just rushing to protect the lead he had gained from his better pit stop and got a little too aggressive.

Somehow Patrick Carpentier managed to avoid Alex' spin, nearly hitting the wall himself. Tagliani was right behind Patrick and unfortunately hit Zanardi. I'm not blaming him for this one per se, but Tag needs to corral his aggressiveness a bit. Many times now over the past 2 years I have seen him fail to slow to avoid accidents, rather, gassing it to try to run through and miss them. Same thing when he spins, he stands on it (although some other drivers have this bad habit as well). This needs to be addressed by CART as it is unsafe.

Hard to believe you didn't know Michael Andretti. As for him not having anything on his dad, well, it's pretty tough to follow up on a legend who was voted the greatest American driver of the century. But Michael is no slouch, and Mario is quick to tell you that Michael is better than he was on the ovals, and that at this point in his career, Michael is a better driver than he was at the same age (39). Those aren't my words, I got them straight from Mario. Go to any CART race, pick up a paddock pass, and ask the man yourself, it's that simple. That's one of the reasons I love CART - great racing, and the drivers and cars are totally accessible.Pablo

Geez man, why don't you just kick me in the stomach why don't ya ;) I've seen the commercial two times, and I just happened to remember Alex b/c he has always been one of my favorites. I've never paid Michael much attention at all. There have been only three CART/Indy drivers that I have been even vaguely interested in over the past 10-12 years: Emerson Fitipaldi, Greg Moore (RIP:(), and Alex Zanardi.

Do you think that I remember EVERY celebrity from every commercial that I see? :D

As for Mario, he has excelled in ALL forms of racing (still chasing that elusive LeMans victory though:D). And yes, he is a hard act to follow.

NFS4:

Sorry, I thought you were a major racing fan, which is why I thought it was odd for you to not know Michael.

As for Mario and LeMans, there's a good chance he will be driving for Audi next year. And he darned near won it once before, except the famed "Andretti Luck" bit yet again. Care to guess who his co-driver was ? :D

And here's a good reason for you to root for Michael - besides being a stand-up guy, being the first gen. son of an immigrant, Michael is very patriotic, and it's not just because of recent events, he's always felt this way.

Check out this pic ... His livery is red, white, and blue, and his helmet design has always simply been a silver base with a wrap-around US flag on it.

This is another terrible lose in the racing world. At least Zinardi was not killed or mentally damaged. It is unfortunate that such a talented driver lost both parts of his legs in what must have been a massive crash. The still pictures I have seen posted on the web show the car tub in tact for the most part. Perhaps there was massive damage on the side of the car not shown as of yet.

This race is supposted to be shown on ESPN at 1pm on monday here for US viewers.
