I just spoke to customer service. They're changing their HDTV return policy in the very near future. She didn't know exactly what their policy would be, but it would no longer be unlimited satisfaction guaranteed.

it will probably end up being similar to the computer return policy of 90 days. Or is it 180?

I'm just amazed that it has carried on as long as it has. I'm sure they were taking an absolute beating on this. I know it brought in a lot of business, but the abuse of the policy was rampant.

I wouldn't call it taking advantage of a corporation. You can purchase extended warranties just about anywhere. Your membership is essentially an extended warranty on anything you purchase at Costco except for computers, and soon televisions. Costco television sets are often more expensive than other stores until you include an extended warranty.

They had a no question lifetime warrenty on their products. people would just buy a TV, get sick of it, and return it two years later. It was a great policy for people who actually used it the right way and honestly. I only buy consoles there b/c of this policy. Nothing worse than buying a $300 console and having it break 3 days after the manufacture warrenty expires.

I like their meat and TP.

As for the electronics, they've never really carried the top of the line or the latest models of products. I don't think I've ever bought electronics from them.

Exactly. Costco makes most of its money from membership dues. I buy lot of things from Costco because of the guarantee. Lot of impulse buys. Costco definitely don't have the lowest price. If the policy is changed, Costco will have to compete on price alone on TVs if they want my business. That means I will probably never buy another TV from Costco since they rarely have the best price.

As a shareholder and member, I've 100% faith that the management will do whatever it's in the best interest of Costco.

Costco's return policy on computer systems is 6 months, which is still pretty generous IMO.

I knew people that would by a DSLR and then upgrade when the original model was out of production. One example was a guy that owned a D30, traded in for the 10D, 20D, and finally a 30D. He is up like a 100 dollars from his original purchase.
Thank God they changed their electronics policy.

Exactly the kind of person who ruins it for everyone else. It's unfortunate that they can't have such a consumer-friendly return policy without having it ruined by abuse.

While you do pay for costco membership, I wouldn't say it's akin to an extended warranty. You pay to be able to purchase bulk/wholesale (semi) at their store, not for the right to return anything whenever they want. That is something they extend to the member to make sure a member gets what they want... not use and return merchandise to get other merchandise they will use and return....

Wait, if I buy a TV now and policy ends next year, will I still have the lifetime/10 year return policy?

Too bad so many people abused their good will. I buy about half of my store bought goods at Costco. I wonder if they had kept the policy to businesses and government employees only that this wouldn't have happened.

It was bound to happen, thanks to all the greedy selfish inconsiderate assholes who abused their return policy.

Not that I'm bitter
