fuck drinking. nobody likes a drunk, not even other drunks. they just want to hang around and get fucked up with someone else.

Ok, Sir Buzz Killington. You know, people usually get drunk with their friends.

I didn't.

I drank alone 95% of the time. I used the 5% of the time I drank with others to justify 100% of my drinking.

me too, in fact i didn't even drink when i was out most of the time, too scared of a DUI.

I thought that I was an alcoholic. It runs in my family. What it took was some love from my current GF to realize that I probably shouldn't continue down this path. I went to a couple meetings, found a bit of like-minded folks there, but what I didn't find was craving booze. I never really did. I still don't. My GF asked me to stop and I did. I found the more meetings I went to the farther away from what I actually felt was going on in those meetings. For an alcoholic - its like trying to quit smoking. I never went to work drunk, I did drink TO get drunk, but I could always say - hey thats enough.

In the end I realized that alcoholism is something that is far worse than what I have.

I spent a good couple years essentially booze-free and never looked back. Take last night for instance. I had a single 175ml airline bottle of rose wine after dinner. I've had a ton of liquor in the house for forever. I don't think about it. I don't crave it, I don't get angry anymore and go drink it to make me feel better.

Just some thoughts from a non-alcoholic.

I hear you. The greatest thing for me was being able to consistently remember where I parked at the grocery store. That and names, dates, phone numbers, etc. Life is so much easier when you can remember stuff.

Glad you were able to quit! I am even more glad that you sought help.

I just found 2 fifths in the cupboard the other day. At first I got had a wave of panic hit me. then I just laughed. I decided it was good to have them around so I could open up the cabinet and flip them off. My little way of letting alcohol know that it doesn't run my life anymore.

I thought you were going to rehab...

"rehab" is nearly unheard of these days. The whole 28 day rehab is reserved for movie stars and people who don't rely on insurance.

If they give you a 3 day detox, you are doing well. You actually have to meet certain conditions to even get that.

ok i have posted this 400 times but i went to a rehab and got detoxed (got out last thursday afternoon) and am now doing the outpatient thing. they lied and said it wasn't an AA/12 step rehab but when i got there it was. so i let them *detox* me which included $1000 for 3 pills, 2 nights, and 4 vitamins.

Really? I was in rehab last spring for 21 days and insurance paid for all but $700. Maybe I just have really good insurance. *shrug*

The Drinky Crow Show EP 0 part 1

This is why it is bad to drink. And even worse watching Adult Swim while drinking.:p:wine:

They just started airing new episodes of this series, and the animation is a mix between water color backgrounds and computer enhanced. Looks pretty slick, and the writing now is a whole lot better than this preview pilot episode. Set your Adult Swim brand DVRs for this. It might be worth it. And don't forget about DVRing Robot Chicken.

Very good post. And something that people need to read.

What I just went through with a friend opened my eyes to it and made it personal.

A girl I have been involved with on and off was "the party girl" and always the life of the party.

She didn't drink daily and thought because of this, she didn't have a problem. But she was wrong.

She would go out for happy hour, and almost every time end up drinking until 1 or 3 in the morning. She would do this only one or two days a week.

But this led to many problems. Spending the night by the toilet or wetting the bed, professional embarrassment and social problems.

One day the movie "Less than Zero" came on and I told her what a deep message the movie had and got her to watch it... and watching it FINALLY made her have an epiphany. She has been dry for 3 months now. After 20+ years of the same pattern of binge drinking she is, for the first time, not destroying her mind and body on a weekly basis.

Binge drinking with little control after the first one or two drinks IS alcoholism. It IS the inability to moderate. And if you cannot moderate a thing, you MUST stop if your health and social life mean anything to you. It doesn't matter if you can control whether or not you have that first drink. What happenes after that first drink is what matters.

Wow, great post.

Wow! I thought I was going to be bashed for liking "Less than Zero."

The problem with the movie, beyond it's being very dated and stylized, is that non-addicts just can't get it. It frustrates them because they cannot understand the nature of addiction itself.

But show it to an addict, and they'll instantly associate with Downey's character.

another good one is "leaving las vegas" and "the lost weekend", the lost weekend is a bit older (from the 50s) but its a great movie about a guy struggling with alcoholism.

I haven't seen those. I'll have to check them out. Thanks!

I think Less than Zero had an effect because we both grew up at that time and the whole style of the movie is kinda nostalgic to us. :)

Does anyone dislike the taste of hard alcohol? Honestly I've never developed a huge taste for it. I can drink a G&T or Vodka Tonic but really I would much rather just have a beer.

I can drink bourbon with coke or ginger ale as long as it's not too strong, but generally I'm with you. I get a much greater pleasure sucking back a cold lager than hard liquor.

I used to drink vodka with impunity, but got sick of it after awhile and now I just don't care for it, or even the smell of it. Except for in a white russian .. mmm. Tequila I've never cared for, the taste or the smell, ugh. Awful stuff. Now if I'm drinking liquor, it's whiskey. I'd say I drink beer more often than hard liquor though, a good stout, or trappist ale.. mm.

"Permanent Midnight" is also pretty good. Kind of silly though, in that it's semi-biographical portrayal of the creator of Alf dealing with his qualude? (I forget) addiction. It's Ben Stiller before he became annoying. Worth watching, anyway.

Tequila is all over the place taste wise. Kind of like wine. You have to drink a lot of different Tequilas to see what I mean. And since most of it is from Mexico, you can understand why it is so hard to pin down a good one. And in Tequilas, there is a direct correlation in most cases to price versus quality, unlike other liquors like Bourbon where even a cheap off brand one can be very drinkable.

I found some 150 proof off brand Tequila that closely resembles moonshine called El Tigre for $10 for a liter on sale at Majestic. I'm almost afraid to drink the stuff, but I might take it to the Thanksgiving party and see what happens, LOL!

Here is what I have been currently enjoying, IN MODERATION lately:

http://www.majesticliquors.com...s/spirits/featured.php

Cuervo Tropina

Crown Card Special

Experience the possibilities of Cuervo Tropina with flavors of pineapple and other tropical fruits. This premium tequila is a perfect shot, on the rocks or with your favorite mixer.

Size: 1.75 Reg: 38.99 on sale: 22.95

This stuff is smooth as silk and makes a great mixer. I think it rocks compared to the orange flavored one, too. I highly recommend trying a bottle of it for the holidays if you like great Tequilas.

So did rise's thread disappear into yet another mod-unapproved dimension of intolerance?

It's not even in my list of recently participated threads.
