Ok so lets get this out of the way first, I could care less if you can drink 5x me, or if I drink 5x more than you. Competing over who can consume the most alcohol is stupid.

Ok so on an average weekend at home(fri/sat night) I will drink 36oz of 92proof rum. That is 3 drinks on Friday night, 3 drinks on Sat night. Each with 6oz of rum in them, and equal parts coke. I do this 2 to 3 weekends a month and only on Friday and Sat nights.

Now, #1 I do get quite buzzed, and #2 I do not get a hangover at all from this liquor. Next day I can function as normal. Let's see...any other relevent info...I am 25 and work 60 hour work weeks if that counts, never missed work for drinking, and it does not bother me to miss a weekend.

So, is it bad that I drink that much/little (depending on your view) in a month? Approx 3/4 of a gallon a month.

Doesn't sound like you're an alcoholic.

That is a lot to drink in one night, but if you were an alcoholic you wouldn't make it through the week without wanting a drink.

Answer these.

My personal test: If alcohol was suddenly gone from the face of the planet, would you be more than just a little disappointed? That is, would you be angry, or think you couldn't have fun on weekends, or something similar?

* Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking?
* Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
* Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking?
* Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning (as an "eye opener") to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover?

That is a sh*tload. 18 shots a night? Even frat boys don't even go this far..

You may feel fine, but your liver may not like you very much.

sounds normal to me

do you wake up craving a drink?

do you need to drink to feel "normal"?

apparently drinking doesn't adversely effect your work or social life...

all these things are a mark of an alcoholic, sounds like you're fine

First of all, it is "couldn't care less". "Could care less" is meaningless in your deposition.

Secondly, the question would be "Why do you need to drink the alcohol?" Enjoyment? Need? Nothing else? If it is for enjoyment, you are not an alcoholic. If it is something else...

One question I was asked during a polygraph was whether anyone had ever said they think I might have a drinking problem . Makes you think, huh?

agreed, i've had a rough day at work and drank ~18 shots of 90 proof bourbon mixed w/ coke (three drinks w/ 6 oz bourbon and 12oz coke) over the course of 6pm to midnight and was fine to go to work the next day. Just gotta drink some water every time you pee and before you go to bed :)

oh, and i'm 1/8 irish so...

The average person will get sent to a hospital after consuming 18 shots a night. We tried to give our friend 21 for his 21st bday, thinking he could handle it since he drinks pretty often and is a big guy..~250lb., but after about 13 he was fubared, and we took him to a hospital that night.

Most people I knew in college, including the biggest meatheads out there would quit after 10 at most on a good night.

Here is my assesment. If it is not a problem now and you keep drinking at that rate, it will become one eventualy. You are the only one who can decide if you need to cut down or stop.

If you do decide to cut down, you will need to look at your life style and make some changes.

Good luck.

Friends usually just say that as joke. My friends say that to me all the time yet I drink way less than you do.

18 shot of rum a night seems pretty excessive to me..
Maybe try just not drinking one weekend, see what happens. That might answer your question?

Straight shots have a different ability to affect you, I think. I'll do 2 shots of whatever and feel pretty damn loopy and won't need anything for another hour plus. I'll drink a good jack n coke with 2 shots in it and it won't mess with me as much. I think part of it has to do with the speed at which you drink it, and how much other stuff. If you drink straight alcohol, you're gonna be pretty messed up. If you have some other stuff that'll be getting into your system with the alcohol it'll slow down the effects.

OP I don't think you're doing to bad, as long as you're drinking just to enjoy yourself. Especially since you hold off on drinking during the rest of the week. I'm kind of the same way, although not with as much alcohol. I usually come home friday after school and do a shot and take a jack n coke or vodka n dr pepper, and smoke some hookah. I'm having to postpone that though cuz I gotta go into work in a few hours, after though, I probably will follow up with the plan.

If you don't drink every day (or pretty much) you're not an alcoholic. What you are is a binge drinker, which is very common, and while not good for you is a minor drug problem in the grand scheme of things.

As to the OP's question - alcoholic? I don't know. Problem with alcohol? I think anyone who drinks 36 oz of alcohol in 2 nights on a regular basis has a problem.

Okay not to be a further party pooper, but according to this site..

http://www.healthstatus.com/cgi-bin/calc/calculator.cgi

A 180lb male drinking 18 oz of rum over a course of 4 hours will have an estimated BAC of 0.26.

And, according to the site a BAC of over .25 results in "serious health issues, including death."

Now I'm as big on drinking for fun as anyone else, and have been doing it twice a weekend for a while now. But rarely do I get over 5-6 oz's a night.
