ALC880 onboard sound or Audigy2 sound card ?

My next motherboard will have ALC880 onboard sound. I have an Audigy2 (non-ZS) card that I can use but I?m debating on whether I should use it. I game occasionally (with headphones) but otherwise just use the little speakers on my Dell 2005FPW. I would not mind selling the Audigy in the FS forum or on eBay but I?m not sure if I should.

I?m sure CPU utilization will go up slightly with onboard sound but will that be the only hit I?ll be able to notice? Of so, keeping the inside of my case nice and tidy is a nice tradeoff for that?

Also, will both work with WinXP 64-bit ?

Thanks,
CxP

i would go for using the audigy 2. i recently upgraded to one from onboard sound, and i was suprised. i thought i had fairly decent onboard sound, but the audigy 2 really impressed me. but if you never plan to upgrade you speakers, and dont expect to get very much money out of the card, then by all means, sell it.

If I read correctly, that is just the standard alc97 onboard sound thing. With my p4p800 going from onboard sound to an audigy 2 was like night and day in terms of quality of sound. Onboard = crap for $10.00 speakers.

The ALC880 version is the high def version of the onboard sound iirc. Still, if it was me, I MIGHT stick with the SB A2. Your choice though. Try both out and see which you like better.

Yeah just try it out and see what you think is better / is it worth it to keep the A2.

Yeah.. I definitely plan on trying them out to determine the subjective difference, but I was wondering if there were technical/objective differences between the two options I should know about....

Thanks,

the biggest thing i can think of eax. i know the audigy has it, but i dont know if the onboard does or not

An audigy2 is a pretty good soundcard, keep it.
All if not most current m/b don't implement on-board sound in a half way decent manner bcause they use inferior dacs and/or have messy designs.
