I'm planning on buying an LCD for college and I found this LCD on newegg.com. It has 5 stars there and this review at Gamepc says that the LCD is good, but I have not seen any other professional reviews of it. Has anyone here tried it and is it any good? I like this LCD because its under $400 and has DVI.

LOL, well I was planning to buy it in a few days (I'm setting up a dedicated Linux computer for development), and then report back with my experiences. If you're going to buy it, I'll just wait and let you be the proverbial guinea (sp?) pig. ;)

I'm sorry I can't give a review now. For some reason I can't get the nvidia drivers to work right. look at my tech support post to find out why.

well i haven't tested it out extensively cause i gotta reinstall everything, but i'll give u some initial impressions.

The monitor came in very good packaging, kudos to albatron for showing great care for their product. The monitor came with 2 dead pixels, near the top but its hardly noticeable and on some screens you don't even see it. The dead pixels are alot less noticeable than the two wires on my trinitron monitor. At first I thought dead pixels would be a horrible thing, but when I saw them, it wasn't a big deal. I hooked up the monitor to my dvi port and it produced crystal clear images, much sharper than the image on my CRT on 1280X1024. On lower resolutions there is a noticeable drop in quality, but the image quality is still decent, even at a super low resolution of 640X480.

Now for what I'm sure what most people have been waiting for, gaming performance. since i reformated my computer, i didn't have many games available, but i was able to try two games, Enemy territory and Counter-strike. For enemy territory the game look beautiful and I saw no ghosting at all. The game looked alot sharper when u put the game in the native resolution, better than CRT. At lower resolutions, it doesn't look as great, but its still good. I feel that the only reason I could tell the difference was because the native resolution looked outstandinh. You can definatley use this monitor for gaming, despite its 25ms response time.

For counter-strike the monitor performed good as well, but not as good as in ET. When I first got in, the color was way too bright, I had to change some of the settings on the monitor to make it look good. The color does not seems as good as a CRT, but the graphics look much sharper. Maybe if i play around with the settings more i can make it look better. The game is also extremely playable. I saw a little, and i emphasize little cause it was barely noticable to me. I only saw it when I was putting the silencer on my assault rifle, and i had to do it a couple of times to tell. In the fighting you could see no ghosting and i doubt you notice the ghosting during a game.

Overall I'm happy with my purchase. The display looks extremely sharp and my eyes feel alot better using this monitor. I did all this testing on DVI, so I don't know how analog works. I'll update the review with more games, analog testing, and maybe try to take a picture of the dead pixels with my webcam (if it can even pick them up, they are REALLY SMALL!!). If you have any questions, feel free to ask. This monitor is a great deal and if your thinking about buying this monitor, i say go for it! :)

NOOOOOOOOOOOO !!! STOPPP STOPPP DONT GET IT .....

Sorry i couldnt have replied to your post to begin with .. i would of told you not to get this monitor ......

OK whats wrong with it you ask ... well nothing really ... if your not planing to play First Person shooters ... but if you are get ready for a headspin .. this monitor has a refresh rate of 25ms and all the other players or A.I bots running around have a shodow effect and are blured heaps ... to sum it up .. this makes for unplayable gameplay and like a drunk feeling that give you a head spin after 10 - 15 minutes of playing ...

I got one of these monitors a few months ago and i dont use it for games .. but i wanted too :(

The thing is a really the size of a 19" CRT ... but its labeld as a 17" LCD ...thats great for value but its shocking to play games with .. if your going to use it to surf the net and play an RTS every now and then thats cool but no way will u be able to play anything else ....

If you want an LCD for gamming make sure you get one that has a rating of at least 15ms refresh times.

:) sorry again

Ive got the Albatron 17" L17AT SILVER TFT LCD Monitor

I used the DVI and VGA connections to make sure it wasn?t the issue for the high level of ghosting and ive also tested it out on two Video cards (the Albatron Geforce FX 5900 & Albatron FX 5600 ) & a friends computer with an ATI card .. no deference.

VGA ( analog ) is shocking on this monitor .. don?t even try too use it ?

I wish i never got this monitor ... :( ... SOB SOB... i haven?t played CS on it yet but i have played The Half life mod Natural Selection and its shocking ... to the point where the ghosting is ridicules .....

Yes the packaging was good and i liked the look of it plus its got a sharp picture and really bright but its still no good for FPS games ...

Ive played heaps of Game on this monitor and RTS?s run fine Star Craft C&C Generals.... Age of Mythology all those things run good no ghosting but FPS games are NOT at all playable ? I don?t know how you can say CS had no ghosting ? it cant be your monitor because my one's the same model and has the same 25ms.

Ive played BF1942 and its not as bad as Natural Selection but its still ghosting heaven ... i got it 2 months ago and it now sits next to my 17" Mitsubishi flat CRT Monitor ... ( Turned off ) .... i don?t even touch the thing .... The main game i play is Natural Selection and i should of looked into a 15ms LCD before i got this Albatron Ghosting circus.

Ohhh by the way I didn?t get any dead pixels in my monitor : )

The LCD mesh is a 1280x1024 size .. that?s why the monitor is at its sharpest when at this resolution to go too a smaller rez your only Zooming into the mesh and making it blurrier. .. Stick with 1024x768 ... and its awsome. just dont get it expecting Half Life 2 ... too play ghost free. :)

I tried C&C Generals, NHL 2003 and Battlefield 1942 today. All run well. I could only see a little ghosting in NHL 2003, but that was only for some quick animations and it was very little. you can definately use this monitor to play games if you use DVI. If anyone wants me to try analog ask. I really don't feel like disconnecting the dvi now and putting analog, but if anyone really wants me to test it, i will.

I recently bought my father this LCD monitor. Its d-sub image quality SUCKS with alot of ghosting on the font, maybe due to his graphics card (TNT2), but CRT's worked fine b4. I recently gave my dad my old Ti4400 and plugged in the DVI. I'd say the improvment was amazing and almost all ghosting and flickers where gone. This monitor has ALOT of options and functions, and i mean ALOT! there 2 different kinds of AUTO and other controls like sharpness that doesn't change anything, if all it fuzzes the font when turned on. The phase on this monitor is not limited, but it feels so, there is always a flicker on the most right or most left side of the screen. Ask me more if u wanna kno more..

I am getting worried here - I just placed an order wih newegg for this monitor - I am wondering if i mafde a mistake and should have spent an extra $100 for the hitachi (16ms response)??? it seems from another newegg review (taz) that this monitor was recently upgraded by albatron from 40 to 25 ms and increased contrast ratio of 500:1 - seems there may be some old models still floating around out there. someone else form newegg got the 40 ms and returned it for the hitachi - only complaint about the hitachi has been toooo bright.

darknight - if u get a chance try this out on analog - I have upgraded my vid card in a while and washoping to stretch a little while longer until the budget improves. games like planetside and ravenshield may be prone to ghosting????

oh well -

thanx!!!

I know I'm late with this, but I finally tested the VGA on this monitor. The graphics are not as sharp as with DVI, but in CS and UT, I notice no ghosting. Amazing. I thought 25ms with VGA would cause extreme ghosting.

Edit: Watching Black hawk down on VGA now, no ghosting.

thanx much darkknight - I sent this to my son at college - he's the gamer in the family - he likes the monitor - has been running vga - his dvi card is not due until santa shows up - one dead pixel so far showed up about two weeks in - middle of the screen - he says it doesn't bother him.

25 ms - great contrast and brightness make this a great monitor for the money.

A little late here too, but I'm one of the first ppl to buy this monitor when Newegg first stocked it back in February. I got the older 400:1 25ms model and I can assure you that this is a top notch monitor. Now I guess they are shipping a 500:1 15ms/25ms (VGA/DVI respectively) model. I also have an NEC 17" 500:1 16ms (VGA only) at work and this Albatron blows it away! Also, from what I read, Albatron was in the display business before they went to pcb goods upwards of 10 years ago. If that's true, then their experience shows.

It's an extremey solid and sturdy monitor with an awesome swivel radius, tidy back cord panel and it's a steel for the quality and options. The OSD is among the easiest I've ever seen and setup is a breeze. Only negative I can come up with - The speakers suck as do most OB monitor speaks, but hey, that's why god made Klipsch PM 5,1's!!! :)

I do a lot of graphics and movie editing as well as play BF1942, NWN, Mafia, Splinter Cell, BG2, WarCraft III, Shadow Bane, EQ, UT2K3 etc. and have never witnessed any ghosting via DVI using an 8500LE and now 9800Pro... I can't rave enough about this monitor, but as a matter of fact, I'll be buying the one that has the TV tuner for my bedroom when I can afford it.

Hope this helps.
