Alavert is the same as Claritin. Clarinex is only slightly different, just enough to earn a new patent.

The rule of thumb is that the more sedating the antihistamine, the more effective. Diphenhydramine (benadryl) is most effective for most, but has the most side effects. Zyrtec is very much the same as Claritin, as is one you forgot, Allegra. Of course individuals vary in response. Some find Zyrtec better than Claritin, and vice versa. Such is medication.

I use Actifed (Antihistamine: Triprolidine HCl, 2.5 mg. Decongestant: Pseudoephedrine HCl, 60 mg.) in doses of 2-3 pills at a time. Not only is it very effective, but when you combine it with large doses of caffeine it makes you feel awake and asleep at the same time.

Where is Allegra? I've found that it works excellent, but I don't like paying for it. As an alternative, I've found if you take two tablets of Walmart's Equate Dayhist Allergy (Clemastine Fumerate) it works about as well and is a lot cheaper.

I've heard Claritin is pretty good and Walmart also has a generic version of the OTC version.

I have always had severe allergies, however, currently I take nothing. I'm not convinced that most/all of the meds out there don't make the situation worse in the long run. If it gets really bad I take Benadryl which works amazingly well but makes you drowsy. I have taken it twice since I moved to NY 5 years ago. Back when I was in FL I was pretty much constantly on Sudafed and often nasacort also, and got Prednisone/Deltasone prescribed several times. I objected to taking those due to sexual side effects and later on found my mom was embedding them in hamburgers and other food.

I took Claritin back in 1989 I think it was while it was still being tested. The first time it worked well, the seond time it worked only a little, the third time it did absolutely nothing. The fact you can become "immune" to the medication that quickly is a really bad sign to me..... which makes it really shocking to me that you can buy this OTC now. I haven't ever taken Alavert, but I really don't think the slew of new allergy meds that have appeared in the past 2 years are to be trusted.

I believe Allegra is actually closer to the old Seldane (a safer version of Seldane.)

Seldane ROCKED! Cleared me up on Day 1. So what if death was a side effect if taking Erythomycin...just don't mix them. I want Seldane back! :(
