YUKON DELTA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, Alaska — The Arctic is warming about twice as fast as other parts of the planet, and even here in sub-Arctic Alaska the rate of warming is high. Sea ice and wildlife habitat are disappearing; higher sea levels threaten coastal native villages.

But to the scientists from Woods Hole Research Center who have come here to study the effects of climate change, the most urgent is the fate of permafrost, the always-frozen ground that underlies much of the state.

Starting just a few feet below the surface and extending tens or even hundreds of feet down, it contains vast amounts of carbon in organic matter — plants that took carbon dioxide from the atmosphere centuries ago, died and froze before they could decompose. Worldwide, permafrost is thought to contain about twice as much carbon as is currently in the atmosphere.

Once this ancient organic material thaws, microbes convert some of it to carbon dioxide and methane, which can flow into the atmosphere and cause even more warming. Scientists have estimated that the process of permafrost thawing could contribute as much as 1.7 degrees Fahrenheit to global warming over the next several centuries, independent of what society does to reduce emissions from burning fossil fuels and other activities.

"They" don't care because they think its god's will and that everything will work out in favor of the white Christians.
Any warming that does occur is due to...

Something to look forward to as the permafrost melts

"In August 2016, in a remote corner of Siberian tundra called the Yamal Peninsula in the Arctic Circle, a 12-year-old boy died and at least twenty people were hospitalised after being infected by anthrax.

The theory is that, over 75 years ago, a reindeer infected with anthrax died and its frozen carcass became trapped under a layer of frozen soil, known as permafrost. There it stayed until a heatwave in the summer of 2016, when the permafrost thawed.

This exposed the reindeer corpse and released infectious anthrax into nearby water and soil, and then into the food supply. More than 2,000 reindeer grazing nearby became infected, which then led to the small number of human cases.

The fear is that this will not be an isolated case."

Have they considered some coal fired refrigeration plants to help keep the ground cold? Think of all the coal jobs that could be created! MAGA

Another option would be to build a giant dome over Alaska to collect the methane and ship it to Russia.

A giant dome could also focus the sun onto the solar powered wall. So much Winning.

That's actually pretty terrifying when you think about it. But does explain the rather rapid increase we've seen in the last couple hundred years. Global warming leads to...more global warming. Not a good cycle.

We as a species need to come together in a CERN/LHC size style and figure out how we are going to artificially manipulate this atmosphere!
JFC, this climate ordeal may prove to be the external common enemy that finally unites us.

Wait, it was warmer 75 years ago than 5 years ago. What happened 75 years ago that we can do again to bring down the temp?

Global warming is very real and the path to extinction of our race is terrifying and will be a slow and painful progression of mass migrations, famine and wars over dwindling resources and shrinking habitable climates.

Why aren't our best and brightest engineers incentivized to develop technologies to delay or perhaps even reverse this catastrophe? Maybe instead of figuring out how to deliver organic grass fed beef by drone or the latest social media fad, there should be a deliberate focus on climate science.

Everybody says we already did.
